Tips to speed-up Firefox

Firefox logoA while back Elena wrote a useful post about how to get more out of the Firefox web browser. This included tips on how to increase your productivity through extensions and keyboard shortcuts.

The one thing that adding more extensions does however is inevitably slow down Firefox. The more extensions and toolbars I add, the slower I notice Firefox becomes, the more RAM it consumes and the more unstable and liable to crash it becomes. Here then are 5 tips that in my experience, have helped prevent these problems:

  • Uninstall old toolbars. This is arguably the major cause of slow downs in Firefox, the dangers of which I discussed in an earlier post. I recently uninstalled a couple of toolbars that I suspected were causing problems and the stability and speed improvements in Firefox were quite dramatic. It now opens in half the time and I’m not subject to the increasingly frequent instability issues I was before. One of the problems is that toolbars are crammed with dynamic links – sometimes ads – and when these change or rotate, Firefox can hang whilst it processes the “updates”. To uninstall toolbars can be a little tricky though. Most have a drop down menu on the far left of the screen where you can change options, buttons and uninstall it. However, some do not in which case you have to go to the “Tools” menu in Firefox and view whether it appears under “Firefox Add-Ons”. From there, you can uninstall or disable it. For those stubborn and sneaky ones that have neither of these options, the only way to remove them is to go to your Windows Control Panel and “Add/Remove programs”. However, the sneakiest toolbars sometimes don’t even appear in there in which case, I recommend using the “Add/Remove Program” tool in CCleaner which shows absolutely everything installed on your PC including Windows Updates.
  • Uninstall old add-ons. It’s likely that you’ve got at least one or two extensions or “add-ons” installed in Firefox. I had a couple of video downloader extensions which no longer worked but I had completely forgotten about. Removing such add-ons speeds up the time Firefox takes to start and should improve performance. If you’re not sure what to remove, ask yourself if you really need all of your add-ons such as that Welsh dictionary or built-in PONG game.
  • Change Firefox’s configuration. If you didn’t already know, you can tweak Firefox in a very precise way by accessing its advanced configuration interface. To do this, type about:config in the address bar. The most common tweak is to find these three entries: network.http.pipelining, network.http.proxy.pipelining and network.http.pipelining.maxrequests. Change the value of the first two to “true” and the last one to a value of “30”. Finally, right click and add a new integer. Name this integer nglayout.initialpaint.delay. Make the value “0”. Both of these tweaks basically reduce the amount of time that Firefox waits when making requests to websites.
  • FireTune for Firefox – This small program is not an add-on. It works separately from Firefox but tweaks the browser’s internal settings to make it faster. You’ll notice an increase in speed after the first time you use it but over time, the effects wear off so you’ll have to run this program once a week to ensure optimum performance. The plus side is that it only requires one click and you’re done.
  • Fasterfox – This add-on allows you to change Firefox’s configuration settings without going through the about:config route. It presents the available fields in an easy to use interface including pipelining, caching and even a speed testing tool to see whether your changes have really made any difference. It also includes an “Enhanced Prefetching” function which basically take advantage of “pre-fetch” tags in web pages that Firefox usually ignores.

The best iPod software for Mac

The full iPod lineSince the release of the original iPod back in October 2001 the line of portable devices from Apple has extended to the minute iShuffle, the slim Nano and recently the classy iPod Touch. iPods have really changed the world of portable music players and turned them into full fledged multimedia devices. Nowadays you can enjoy your music on the go as much as you can watch movies and video clips or all your recent photos.

Now the best way to upload content onto your iPod is via good ol’ iTunes. However you shouldn’t just stick to Apple’s default application. There are a number of excellent third party programs out there that will help you do much more with your iPod, whether converting videos, syncing your mail or managing your media library. We’ve decided to list up ten of the most useful iPod applications for Mac. If you’re a PC user, make sure to check out our lists of top 5 iPod video converters and top 10 iPod apps.

Top 5 tools to transfer VHS to your PC

VHS cassetteOne of the best things about YouTube in my opinion, is the ability to watch things that were on TV years ago and you thought you’d never see again. Of course, most of that footage has been lying dormant on dusty video cassettes for years but YouTube has given them all a new lease of life. If you’ve got some footage on tape that you’d like to share with other users, you’ll need some software to transfer it from your VHS cassette to your PC’s hard drive. Most importantly, before you start anything, you’ll have to check that you’re PC or laptop has a video capture card. Instructions about how to go about finding the right capture card for your PC can be found here. After that, any one of these top tools can be used to capture the video.

  • BAO TV – Dedicated VHS and Betamax capture tool which requires only a TV Card
  • Easydivx – Turn your VHS tapes into DivX format instantly

Good luck with these tools and in the meantime, I’ll leave you with one of my favourite TV moments, recorded on VHS and rescued from oblivion by YouTube. [Video after the fold]

Space saving software for your hard disk

Hard Drive Space logoIt doesn’t seem to matter how many external hard drives I buy, I fill them up no sooner than I’ve connected them. Most of the time, I don’t even have a clue how full they are either – I just keep adding videos and music until I get that dreaded “Disk Full” message, usually whilst trying to do something in a hurry.

Help is at hand however with a few tools designed to track your hard disk usage and capacity. Try starting with something simple like Abaiko Disk Space Monitor which, as the name suggests, concentrates on monitoring your disk’s capacity. It shows clearly exactly how full your disks are no matter how many you have attached. If you’re working on a much grander scale, such as a network administrator, then you’ll need something a bit more powerful like DiskMonitor which keeps an eye on all PCs and hard drives attached to your network.

Space concerns are only one aspect of disk usage though. If you’re experiencing performance problems on your hard drive then you’d be better to install something that’s more multipurpose. An example is Hard Disk Sentinel which monitors hard disk capacity, but also such things as the temperature and overall “health” of the disk which inevitably declines after years of use. The same goes for Disk Watchman which performs a similar job but does it much more discreetly, is lighter on your CPU and therefore a better choice for slower machines.

Of course, if none of this really helps you keep your hard disk usage under control, you should take a step back and look at what exactly is on your drive with TreeSize and you’ll probably find there’s all sorts of old files taking up valuable space which you can simply delete.

Updated: Download free music on your mobile phone

There are lots of great mobile apps that can let you listen to music on your phone. Over the years, we’ve written lots of articles to help our readers enjoy music on their phones. Here are some of our favorites.

5 Android apps for audiophiles

While the stock music player in Android OS is okay for casual listeners, audiophiles will always want more options and customization when it comes to their music libraries. These are top five Android Music Apps that offer more features and functionality, like video playback.

How to copy specific songs to your iPhone

What if you only want to copy certain selected songs to your iPhone? iTunes doesn’t feature this option and you can’t just drag and drop songs as you did with older iPods. However, there’s a very simple trick you can use as a way around this apparent limitation.

Android music players: Zimly versus TuneWiki

Zimly and TuneWiki are two of the top Android music players on Softonic. Niamh cmpared them both, and I gave them an identical – and very respectable – 8 out of 10. If you’re trying to choose between them, here’s a run through of both of them, briefly concentrating on what each does best.

SoundTracking lets you share music you love

After the release of Instagram, the popular photo-based social network for iPhone, many other new apps have been presented as “the Instagram for” whatever other thing they did. This is the case of SoundTracking, a new app that has been described as Instagram for music.

Access your music in the cloud with MP3Tunes

Spotify is really popular, offering a huge library of music to listen to on demand from computers and smart phones. I’ve said before that I’m not a huge fan, and MP3tunes addresses on of my complaints: that Spotify doesn’t have everything I want to listen to!

Do you have other favorite Softonic articles about mobile music? What about any apps you already use and want to share?

[This article was updated from an original published in 2008 by James Thornton. TC]

How to: Normalize the volume of your MP3 library

How to normalize MP3 filesNot all MP3 files have the same sound quality, let alone the same volume. And there’s nothing more irritating than having your eardrums suddenly pierced by an awfully strident MP3 that sounds too loud in your iPod, only to be followed by one that can’t hardly be heard at all.

The easiest way to avoid these situations – and save yourself from deafness – is normalizing the volume of your MP3 collection, that is, making all of your songs sound at a similar level so that you don’t need to be constantly adjusting the volume in your player. And the best software app to do so is MP3Gain.

This simple program enables you to normalize your MP3 files in three easy steps: first, select the files or folders you want to be normalized. Second, click on the Analysis button to make MP3Gain analyze the tracks on the list. And third, click on the Gain button to adjust their volume.

Both the analysis and gain steps can be configured to be done according to album, which normalizes songs in a single album, relative to each other, or to track, where your whole collection is managed as one album. Also, the program sets the default “normal” volume to 89 dB, but you can freely change this value.

After MP3Gain has finished normalizing your collection (it may take a while, depending on its size), you’ll be able to enjoy your favorite songs at a perfectly consistent volume and a better sound quality.

Software that pushes all the right buttons

Flash buttonsButtons are a handy and attractive way to add shortcuts and functionality to a website or desktop. In the past, it used to be a complicated process requiring at least some programming knowledge but nowadays there are plenty of programs to help novices create them.

Which type of program you use will depend upon whether you want to create buttons for a website or your desktop. This could be anything from a button to launch applications to a toolbar shortcut in your browser. One of the most versatile is 1 Cool Button Tool which allows you to create buttons in either Java or Flash. It’s designed mainly for adding buttons and banners to websites but it can be used for just about anything. With Vista all the rage now, another nice program is Vista Buttons which allows you to create Buttons for Vista, XP and even Windows 98. No programming knowledge is required and the results look remarkably professional.

If web design is your thing, then Crystal Button is a dedicated button creator for websites. The program offers 2D, 3D, metallic and Mac style button graphics amongst many more. If you’re a bigger fan of XP than Vista, then you can also give your site an XP touch with XP Web Buttons. For something more flexible and easy to use, try Likno Web Button Maker which includes shadow, lighting and text effects.

A look at the new Dictionary in Mac OS X 10.5

DictionaryBecause most applications like word processors, mail clients or internet browsers now almost always offer an automatic spell checker you barely ever find yourself opening up a dictionary to double check a word.

Whether you’re writing a document, preparing a new blog post or sending an email you can trust whatever program you use for getting the spelling right for you. However it’s still useful to have a dictionary with you, whether to check the definition of a word or quickly find a synonym or antonym.

Mac users for one, might not all be aware that they have a very effective Dictionary application built right into their computer. With Leopard, it’s enjoyed a few significant improvements. When you’re connected to internet, you can now automatically search Wikipedia, giving you access to updated content from the online public encyclopedia. The application also offers much more than just a plain dictionary. You can check grammar, spelling, pronunciation and more specific material such as chemical references, weights or conversions. Labels that show up at the top of the Dictionary window as Apple, Wikipedia, All and Thesaurus can also be customized to your liking. As Macworld explains, all you need to do is control click on any of the labels, select “Edit label” and then type in whatever name you prefer. Be aware that the “All” label can not be changed though.

Another improvement in the latest version of Dictonary is that it now supports Japanese and English to Japanese (and vice versa) translations. For other less lucky users we suggest taking a look at Tom’s post on how to add extra dictionaries to OSX and iWork , using a little application called cocoAspell. That way, whatever language you’re working with, you’ll be able to use the Mac Dictionary.

Top 5 tools for keeping an inventory

Inventory logoInventories are a useful way of keeping track of exactly what you have got and what you haven’t. For businesses they’re essential but for network administrators, they’re also useful to keep track of what is connected to your network. As people come and go, new equipment arrives and old is shipped out, it’s easy to lose track of what’s going on. The same goes with your household possessions, music and film collections and anything else that you surround yourself with. With this in mind, here are 5 top programs for keeping an inventory:

  • iMagic Inventory – Keep track of your clients payments with this invoicing inventory
