Sony has sent PlayStation users an email spelling out licensed, not sold. What buyers get is a limited, non-exclusive personal right to access the software, not full legal ownership of it.
So even when you pay full price, a digital PlayStation game is still subject to Sony’s platform rules, licensing arrangements, and whether the service stays available. Access can change or disappear because of disputes, store closures, account problems, or servers going offline.
And the timing isn’t random. Sony is already taking heat over plans to stop making physical discs for new titles in January 2028, which has put preservation and consumer rights back under the spotlight. Digital copies usually can’t be resold, shared, collected, or even played unless the storefront they depend on is still up and running.
If you buy digital PlayStation games often, this reminder lands a little differently, especially after the earlier backlash over purchased Discovery video content vanishing from PlayStation libraries before Sony walked that removal back.
Sony isn’t alone here. Valve’s Steam, Microsoft’s Xbox, and Nintendo all use the same license-first setup. Still, with blackout protests, pressure from lawmakers in Brazil, Sony’s earlier refund case in Australia, and California pushing for clearer disclosure rules, Sony’s stance is clearly spelled out in the PlayStation user agreement and the PlayStation Store terms.
