Yahoo! finally launches two-step verification

Yahoo! finally joins the likes of Google, Apple, Facebook, and many more in integrating two-step verification for its users’ accounts. Two-step verification is a security measure that makes is tougher for hackers to gain access to your account. Similar to Google’s implementation of two-step verification, Yahoo! now requires verification of your identity via your mobile number or a security question when authorizing new browsers and devices.

Unfortunately, not all Yahoo! apps (Mail for Android and iOS) will take two-step verification and that’s where App Passwords come in. Yahoo! gives users the ability to create a temporary, randomized password to be used for that specific app. Once you’re logged in with that temporary, password, you won’t need it again unless you log out. This makes sure that only authorized apps have access to your Yahoo! information.

To find out how to enable two-step verification for your Yahoo! account, check out the video above.

Grand Theft Auto Online plagued by server issues on launch day

Today marks the release of Grand Theft Auto Online, but its release has been marked with server issues. Users are faced with issues logging onto the game, freezing when joining a session, and tons of timeouts.

Rockstar anticipated that demand for GTA Online would be massive and quelled player expectation by saying GTA Online is “going to be something brand new” for the company and to expect some bugs and issues during launch. Server issues aren’t a surprise as GTA V has broken the record for the most successful video game of all time, selling over 15 million copies and making $1 billion in its first three days.

The support site for GTA Online is currently slammed with players seeking help with the game’s rocky launch. Rockstar says it’s aware of the situation and is currently working on expanding server capacity. “One thing we are already aware of, and are trying to alleviate as fast as we can, is the unanticipated additional pressure on the servers due to a significantly higher number of players than we were anticipating at this point…We are working around the clock to buy and add more servers, but this increased scale is only going to make the first few days even more temperamental than such things usually are,” writes Rockstar.

In the meantime, players will have to enjoy their single-player campaign until GTA Online is stable enough to host millions of online players.

Grand Theft Auto Online: 5 things you need to know about multiplayer

Coming two weeks after the official release Grand Theft Auto V, Grand Theft Auto Online is still shrouded in mystery. Here are five things you absolutely must know about GTA Online so that you can be ready to play GTA V Online.

Tips about multiplayer

How do you play GTA Online?

Those who own a copy of GTA V (PS3 and Xbox 360) will have free access to GTA Online after they’ve downloaded and installed an update that will be released on the PlayStation Network and Xbox LIVE in the next few hours. Once the update is properly installed, you can access GTA Online from the GTA V menu or by selecting it at the bottom of the character selection wheel.

What time will GTA Online really be available?

Access to GTA Online depends on the downloading and installing of the GTA V update from the PlayStation Network and Xbox LIVE. Rockstar announced that the update should be available today from 7am ET.

Do you have to pay to progress faster?

Rockstar says that the GTA Online transaction system does not affect gameplay by allowing, for example, a player who spends (real) money to progress faster. In addition to the GTA$ (the currency of the game), all players must play to earn Reputation Points (RP) that will unlock access to the more expensive items.

How much can you customize the appearance of the characters?

GTA Online sets itself apart from other online games when it comes to character creation. Here, pointing the cursor allows you to shrink or lengthen the bridge of the nose of your avatar. With GTA Online, you can choose the parents and grandparents of your character to determine his DNA! All that remains is to determine his lifestyle (raver, gangster, hipster, sports fanatic, etc..) to finalize the creation of an avatar that’s one of a kind.

Will we encounter Trevor, Franklin and Michael in GTA Online?

The events of GTA Online take place several months before those of GTA V. As a result, it’s possible to meet and interact with some of the secondary characters encountered during the single player campaign, although it seems like you won’t come across the main characters from the single player game.

Judging by the commercial success of GTA V, there’s a good chance that the game won’t be playable in the first few hours after the official launch! In case you can’t access GTA Online, just sweat it out and tell us in the comments! And if you are able to play, give us your first impressions!

Back to School? Josh has some apps for you…

Josh is 16, is about to go back to school and this year,  he’ll go back armed with apps to make studying, taking notes, and keeping up-to-date on his grades, tests and absences even easier. Here are his must-haves!

“Nobody needs a vacation as much as the person about to go back to school. Well, I guess that’s not exactly how the saying goes… but it pretty much sums it up, right?

In the end, it’s the same problem every year. It starts with math, pop quizzes, Spanish, trying to squeeze in a snack between classes and all sorts of other stuff… there’s no escape! And of course, I can forget about getting a car. ‘When you’re 18 you can have a car’, my parents say. So until then, I guess I’ll be picking Ashley up on my skateboard…

Anyway, this time I’m going back to school prepared; I don’t want to risk failing another class. What apps can help me?”

wordreference-comFor starters, WordReference (for iPhone) is perfect for my English homework, a dictionary that’s super useful.

If I really want to get down to business in Spanish class, I can poke around Phrasebook (for iPhone and Android), which is a million times better for managing languages than a book!

If I don’t feel like spending time on it though, I’ll use an automatic translator.  The best ones google-translate are Google Translate (for iPhone and Android),iTranslate Voice for iOS and Trippo Mondo for Android.

evernote-1

Of course, I use Evernote to take notes in class (for iPhone and Android). I also found out that it has an OCR function, meaning I can scan pages with my camera and convert it into text.  I can even record my classes (I guess that means I can pay a little less attention in class and a little more attention to Ashley).  It’s awesome! Actually, what’s even cooler is that I can share my notes and videos with her!

dropboxBy putting my notes or video files in my public folder on Dropbox (available on my iPhone, as well as her Android), she can have a copy of my notes, or any other files I want to share with her, like pictures from my recent surfing trip to Costa Rica (she doesn’t have to know that the one picture of me actually surfing is the only time I managed to stay on my board the entire day).

imatematica

Last year, she gave me a math tip when she told me to try iMatematica, which she uses on her Android. I thought to myself, there’s no way that app exists for the iPhone. Well, it turns out it does! Now I have every formula possible right in my pocket.

When I’m a bit stressed, I can play a round of brain boosting games (trust me, they’re much more fun than they sound). WordOnThis summer I discovered WordOn (for iPhone as well as for Android) and I played so much that I won 43 out of 51 rounds; I would have won all of them if it weren’t for “anna41445” who managed to beat me!

RuzzleMy friend Mark challenged me in Ruzzle (this one is for both the iPhone and Android), and we battle it out. He always finds a ton of short words; I usually fewer words, but I look for the long ones that are worth more points.

Mark also likes those test things, so he’s always playing around on Logical Test (which I think is just for Android, or I’d be playing it too). Basically it’s a bunch of puzzles, riddles and stuff like that, and some of them are actually really interesting!

And they say smartphones make you dumb.

If you’ve been out of school for a while then feel free to recommend a few apps to go back to work prepared!

BitTorrent launches private, secure instant messaging

BitTorrent has launched BitTorrent Chat in private alpha testing phase. It’s billed as ‘private instant messaging via secure, distributed technology,’ a server-less system designed for the security concerned user.

The system is designed so Chat doesn’t store any of your messages on servers, so there is no data for government agencies to request from BitTorrent. Messages will be sent using ‘an encrypted peer to peer network’, although no amount of encryption makes a 100% secure system. BitTorrent Chat will be completely free.

The usual model for free services is that you ‘pay’ by allowing the service provider to use some of your data for things like advertising. It’s not clear how BitTorrent Chat will work in this respect.

You can sign up for the closed Alpha testing by entering your email. For some Reddit users, this already undermines the privacy claims of BitTorrent Chat. Redditor mist0r_wiggles commented, ‘and yet they require you to enter your email to use. Sounds like a trap,’ although that is a pretty paranoid position to take. They also criticize the lack of open source documentation on the project.

GTA Online goes live at 7am ET

You’ve had two weeks to play through the story mode, and from 7am ET you’ll be able to go online, join a crew and play the ambitious GTA Online, which is free if you own GTA V.

History is littered with disastrous online game launches – who can forget SimCity this spring? Rockstar Games will have their work cut out for them with GTA Online, as even access to the Social Club servers was strained on the day GTA V was launched. Will everyone be able to jump into GTA Online as soon as it goes live?

Once you’re online, Rockstar is promising that levelling up and making money will never be a grind, as is often the case with online gaming. ‘Doing robberies, stick-ups, winning races and other profitable activities‘ will be the focus online, and later in the year there will be a Content Creator tool so you can create your own online activities.

Character creation is a little different – you’ll begin by choosing your gender, mother and father. Decide if either parent has ‘genetic dominance’, then choose from a set of ‘lifestyle variables’ that will add to your character’s appearance and starting stats.

Apple, Facebook, Google and others back government transparency bill

Dozens of technology companies including big names like Apple, Facebook, Google, Microsoft and many more are backing bills that support giving companies the ability to reveal more details about the government’s secret requests for information. Since Edward Snowden’s release of classified documents of the NSA’s massive collection of internet data, companies have been pressuring the government for leniency for revealing specifics about government data requests. Companies like Yahoo! and Apple have released information about government data requests to placate user fears.

“Such transparency is important not only for the American people, who are entitled to have an informed public debate about the appropriateness of that surveillance, but also for international users of U.S.-based service providers who are concerned about privacy and security.”

In a letter submitted to the Center for Democracy and Technology, the companies outed in the NSA PRISM scandal are urging Congress to pass the Transparency Act of 2013, backed by Senator Al Franken and Representative Zoe Lofgren. The bill will allow the companies to reveal how often they received government requests and how often they turned over data.

“Such transparency is important not only for the American people, who are entitled to have an informed public debate about the appropriateness of that surveillance, but also for international users of U.S.-based service providers who are concerned about privacy and security.,” reads the letter.

It is heartening to see that major technology companies like Apple, Yahoo!, and Facebook are standing strong behind government transparency instead of brushing it under the rug. Still, it’s uncertain whether Congress will even pass Transparency Act of 2013 as it is currently waiting in committee before it moves to the House and Sentate for debate.
