Will this be Facebook’s next big move? This image may be a clue

A new patent reveals that Facebook is currently investigating the market for a car-sharing platform.

We are already accustomed to using Facebook to create or join events, therefore coordinating a shared car trip should be no obstacle for the social media giants.

Facebook’s idea is to make the activity of car sharing into an event. Here you have a rough plan of how it could work:

As you can see, Facebook should be able to help  you organize the details and even go as far to provide suggestions of who may wish to accompany you.

A month ago, the company announced its agreement with Uber that allows users to book a car using the Messenger app. In their statement, Facebook also hinted that they would look to add similar services in the near future.

Five fantastic free alternatives to Microsoft Office

Microsoft Office is beyond a doubt the most recognizable productivity suite out there. But not everyone wants to invest in office software, so we have found you the five best free alternatives.

OpenOffice (Windows|Mac)

Perhaps the best known of our list is OpenOffice. This is a powerful package that provides four main applications: Writer (Work), Calc (Excel), Impress (PowerPoint), and Base (a management tool). All of these are great, but what makes Open Office standout are it add-ons that further increase its power.

LibreOffice (Windows|Mac)

LibreOffice is an off shoot of OpenOffice that is developed with the same ethos. It is a complete suite that continues to grow and renew itself thanks to the support of its ever growing number of followers. Though it is similar to OpenOffice, LibreOffice provides greater compatibility and a faster update cycle.

Google Docs (Web|iOS|Android)

You are probably already well aware of Google’s incredibly versatile online productivity suite. To use Google Docs all you need is a Gmail account to access Drive. From there you can store, manage, and edit all kind of documents for free, either through your browser or with the mobile apps. Best of all these all sync automatically, letting you continue working when on the move.

FreeOffice (Windows)

It may not be the most well-known on the list, but that does not impact FreeOffice’s quality. Offering TextMaker, PlanMaker, and Presentation’ll, you won’t feel like you are missing anything with this suite. In addition to this, it is fully compatible with all Microsoft file types and it is lightweight, making it perfect for older PCs.

Office Online (Web)

That’s right, a great free alternative to Office is Office… well, Office Online. Microsoft’s connected service that integrates OneDrive, slightly stripped back versions of Word, Excel, and Power Point, plus a few extras like OneNote and Sway. Each of these tools also integrates Skype to better facilitate collaborative work.

And there you have it, 5 apps to help you get productive without spending a cent. If you think we have forgotten any, just let us know in the comments

Next week we’ll talking about Chromecast apps. Subscribe so you don’t miss that, and I’ll see you then.

Apple developing new technology so that you’ll never run out of battery

Running out of battery is one of the biggest problems smartphones users face on a daily basis. Now, if Bloomberg’s rumors are true, Apple may have a solution to put an end to that problem. The idea is basically to be able to charge our devices from a distance.

There are currently products on the market such as cable-free chargers from Samsung and Apple that have the ability to charge mobiles or tablets using a docking station or charge-surface, but of course, the device always needs to be on top of the charger, which in itself uses a cable, kind of defeating the object.

This could all change with the new technology that Apple apparently may be working on, which would allow remote charging for iPhones and iPads.

But how far away are we talking? Meters? Miles?

For the time being, we don’t have a clue, but if this rumor does come true, and whatever the distance, it is sure going to revolutionize the way we charge our phones.  We’ll keep you updated!

Five humans behind the memes

You either love them or you hate them, but one thing’s for sure, you can’t escape them.

“Memes” have become increasingly popular over the last couple of years and regularly haunt our social media feeds with the usual faces, and those bold, white letters.

But, who are these people? We decided to delve a little deeper to understand who these people are, and how their faces have become nothing short of internet sensations.

1. Blake Boston

Known as “Scumbag Steve”, Blake Boston is now a 25-year-old living in Boston. His mom apparently took the famous photo which he uploaded to his MySpace account many years ago.  He apparently doesn’t get recognized in the street simply because he’s put on so much weight.

2. Silvia Bottini

Italian-born Bottini is better known as “First World Problems” girl, and is a full time model and actress. The image in question was simply a stock photo image which has gained her tearful expression internet stardom!

3. Jonathan Goldsmith

Better known as “The Most Interesting Guy in the World”, Jonathan Goldsmith is an American actor, who starred in the advertisement for “Dos Equis”beer, where the image is originally from. He’s well-known for his extremely deep voice and is a very keen sailor, as you can see.

4. Sammy Griner

The original photo was taken by Laney, the child’s Mother, who later uploaded it onto Flickr back in 2007. He quickly became popular as the kid who “hates sandcastles” but was later renamed “Success Kid” which has stuck ever since.

5. Lania Morris

Famous for being the “Overly Attached Girlfriend”, Texan Laina Morris gained internet fame through her YouTube channel where she first created the character. She continues to create similar videos and has over half a million subcribers on YouTube.

New collar claims to interpret dogs’ barks

Remember Pixar’s movie “Up”? The one where the dogs wear collars that translate their barks and thoughts into human language? Soon- this invention is going to be real (apparently), and the name they’ve given it is “WhatsYapp.”

WhatsYapp look like an ordinary collar that you put around your dog’s neck, yet when your dog barks, the message is converted and sent directly to your smartphone in the form of a WhatsApp message – so you can give your dog exactly what they need. “Let’s go for a walk”, “I’m hungry” or “Where are you?” are just some of the phrases available on the collar.

The collar is not yet available to buy as it’s still in the development stages as the developers continue to explore the various reactions from animals.

WhatsYapp will connect directly to your smartphone via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, and will basically consist of the same technology that makes up a smartwatch: microphone, movement detector, etc.

Obviously, this could be a great idea, but we can’t help but question: up to what point will this device be able to interpret our dog’s thoughts and barks? Does this seem like a product with a future, or just a gimmick from Fetch, the British pet store that has come up with it?

Gotta catch ’em all at the Super Bowl

For those of you who didn’t realize, Super Bowl is quite the big deal in terms of American football, and is pretty much up there with the Oscars and Independence Day as far as national celebrations are concerned.

Over the years, we’ve seen some spectacular advertisements and sponsors, yet nothing prepared us for what we got this year: Pokémon.

Yes you heard right, and if you haven’t had a chance to check the advert out- fear not, here it is:

The video comes at the time when we commemorate 20 years of Pokémon (yes, two decades of Pikachu!), and the launch of a new game soon to be released.

So what’s the relation between Pokémon and Super Bowl? Well, evidently, not a lot – but it will make for some great visual fun at the beginning of the third quarter.

And, if you’re a true Pokémon fan, make sure you don’t miss the subtle references during the first part of the video!

The Facebook Empire continues to conquer

It’s a sobering thought when you realize the power of Facebook in the world of social media.

Both Facebook and Messenger are incredibly powerful by themselves. But, let’s not forget the company also acquired Instagram back in 2012, and WhatsApp in 2014, for a combined sum just short of $20 billion (you probably heard that they’re not short of cash).

A recent article on website Übergizmo recently explored the number of active users the company are currently boasting, and the results are, quite frankly shocking.

Last year, Facebook released statistics indicating they had 1.49 billion active users each month, (users using Facebook, Messenger, WhatsApp, and Instagram).  Just a year later, the company has seen a growth of 100 million active users, which now gives the company a staggering 1.59 billion monthly active users – the equivalent of almost a quarter of the world’s population.

Übergizmo was also kind enough to provide an inforgraphic showcasing the company’s impressive statistics:

Yes, the numbers are mind-blowing, but when you can barely think of a person who doesn’t use any of the four, you’re not really surprised Mr Zuckerberg is currently the sixth richest person in the world.

Three Lara Croft games to play before Rise of the Tomb Raider

Rise of the Tomb Raider is finally out on PC this week. And – with everything Xbox One owners have been saying about its fluid story, amazing graphics, and focus on actually raiding tombs – it is fair to say that I am very excited.

But, if you haven’t been keeping up with Lara’s adventures since the original Tomb Raider was released on PlayStation back in 1996 (Windows|iOS|Android), then I have three games for you to enjoy before enjoying embarking on her latest escapade.

TOMB RAIDER, 2013 (Windows|Mac)

If you are excited for Rise of the Tomb Raider but haven’t yet played the 2013 reboot, Tomb Raider, you are missing out. The story, penned by Rihanna Pratchett, lays out the origin of this fascinating character, who begins here adventure as a curious student of Japanese archaeology and finishes as hardened, bow-wielding, survivor.

Lara and her friends are separated after being shipwrecked on an island, leaving the young hero to brave the elements, do battle with fanatical mercenaries, and rescue her friends. Oh, there are evil Japanese demons and spirits to deal with too. Really, she is just having a bad day all-round.

Her adventure takes you between the highest peaks to the lowest caves, and it all looks incredible. The narrative ties together the action that fluidly moves between navigation, combat, and environmental puzzle solving. Along the way Lara grows in confidence, skill, and resilience in a way that satisfies the story, gameplay, and her growth as a character. Absolutely brilliant.

Tomb Raider: Guardian of Light (Windows|iOS|Android)

Lara Croft: Guardian of Light is a spin-off of the main Tomb Raider franchise. Using a twin-stick shooter mechanic, it was designed as a small, fast-paced downloadable experience. While it retained the series’ visual motif of exploring ancient civilizations, it puts everything in an isometric perspective and focuses on action.

The story begins with Lara witnessing the release of Xolotl out of his imprisonment in the Mirror of Smoke, along with his army of trolls, giant spiders, and other demonic hordes. Even the famous tomb raider may have struggled with this alone, but luckily the mirror also spits out Totec, the Mayan leader of the Guardians of Light. Joining forces – at least in the co-op game – the two heroes head after Xolotl.

The arcade style run-and-gun nature of Guardian of Light feels very different most Tomb Raider titles. Enemies come thick and fast, and you must take them down quickly rather than utilizing stealth and guile. There is a good amount of problem solving too, however, and nowhere is this clearer than in co-op when the pair must combine their unique talents to move forward.

Lara Croft GO (iOS|Android)

With Hitman GO (iOS|Android) and Lara Croft GO out on iOS and Android, the GO name is fast becoming one of mobile gaming’s greatest series. These turn-based, board game like experiences look wonderful, with a minimalist style that is both beautiful and clear. Plus, Lara Croft GO is the best to date.

Being turn-based game, you get your chance to move and attack using the game’s simple swipe and tap inputs. You can plan your move for as long as you like, because the system ensures that any monsters or other environmental hazards must wait for you to move before they take their GO… sorry. Don’t be fooled by the gentle pace, you’ll spend many a tense moment trying to work out just how many spaces that spider can move before you commit to an action.

It terms of gameplay it is the biggest departure for the series, but it remains faithful to the Tomb Raider ethos and I would say that it is the best portable Lara game available.

That’s my list of the best Lara Croft and Tomb Raider games out there, but if you think I missed off any classics, let me know below. That’s if for this week, remember to subscribe so you never miss an episode of Click-Swipe-Play, and remember to like and share this video if you enjoyed it.

See you next time!

WhatsApp: the future of sharing documents?

Big news! WhatsApp are finally giving us the privilege to share text documents as well as other files over the app!

This information has been leaked by a Reddit user going by the name CarbonAtom, who has recently explored the latest betas of the WhatsApp code. According to their findings, we will soon be able to share .doc, .pdf, .ppt, .xls files as well as others. This is great news for students and professionals who will soon be able to share classwork, documents and presentations using the communication tool we probably use the most!

Besides the file types, the Reddit user has also identified the icon WhatsApp will potentially use in order for you to share files with your contacts:

The launch date for this function is currently unknown, but rest assured, we’ll give you all the details as soon as more information is released / leaked!

Meet the technology 100x faster than Wi-Fi

Li-Fi: it’s a word that’s been lurking around the internet for the last couple of months (some may say years), and although we all love the idea of having much faster internet, very few of us know exactly how it works, and when we can expect to see it.

In a nutshell, “Li-Fi” means Light Fidelity, just as Wi-Fi means Wire Fidelity (but you knew that, right?). It’s basically a wireless optical networking technology that utilizes LEDs in order to transmit data.

Confused? Read on.

Light is part of the electro-magnetic spectrum, as are radio waves (what Wi-Fi currently runs on). The difference is that light has a frequency range ten thousand times higher than radio waves, therefore has the capacity to transfer data energy in far less time.

A professor from the University of Edinburgh called Harold Haas claims to have been the first person to identify light as a way to transfer internet data, which is not only faster but a lot more secure due to the fact light cannot penetrate walls. Here he is introducing and demonstrating the technology back in 2011.

Can’t view the video? Click here.

Just to give you another  example of how fast it is, scientists involved in an experiment using Li-Fi last year were able to achieve data transmission at 224 gigabits per second. To put that into perspective, imagine downloading 18 movies (of 1.5GB each) in just one second. Still sounding a bit too science fiction for you?

The technology utilizes Visible Light Communication (VLC), which basically works like an insanely fast (invisible to the human eye) Morse code. These “Morse” coded messages can be used to transmit binary codes.

You can see here the potential of how it could work and be adapted into real life:

Fascinating stuff huh?

Studies are still currently in motion, and there are many people saying it’s just not feasible or necessary to replace our Wi-Fi systems with Li-Fi technology. Instead, engineers are looking at ways the two technologies can work together. Late last year, it was announced that the company pureLiFi had joined forces with a French lighting company with the intention to release Li-Fi enabled products by the end of 2016. Stay tuned for more updates soon!
