2026 midterms already draw record $1.6 billion: Tech money leads

America’s 2026 midterm elections are on track to be the most billionaire-funded in U.S. history. Nearly $1.6 billion has already been committed, and about $1.05 billion of that, roughly 65%, is going to Republicans, based on campaign-finance tallies drawn from Federal Election Commission filings.

That matters because money still wins a lot of elections. Historically, the higher-spending candidate goes on to win more than 90% of House races and about 80% of Senate contests, according to campaign-finance analyses. Cash like this can shape the race long before Election Day, from the ads people see to candidate recruitment, turnout efforts, and the story lines that take hold in battleground states.

A lot of the money is coming out of tech and finance, according to FEC filings. Elon Musk has given $90.6 million, and the Musk-backed America PAC could add another $100 million to $120 million. Jeff Yass has put in $90 million.

Ben Horowitz and Marc Andreessen have given about $115 million combined, again according to FEC filings. On the Democratic side, George Soros and Alex Soros have supplied $102.8 million through Democracy PAC, while Stephen Mandel and Susan Mandel have given more than $24 million, much of it aimed at moderates.

Corporate spending has also climbed to a record $646 million, about 40% higher than in the 2024 presidential cycle, based on campaign-finance tallies built from FEC filings. More than half of that money comes from crypto, online betting, and AI-linked firms.

And then there’s the darker pool of money. Super PACs including America PAC and Democracy PAC have taken in $200 million from undisclosed sources, according to campaign-finance tallies, in a post-Citizens United system where concentrated wealth carries outsized political power.

If you follow U.S. politics, keep an eye on this. You can track it yourself through Federal Election Commission filings.
