Steam is packed with features that go far beyond downloading and launching games, but many users overlook essential tweaks that can drastically improve performance. Whether you’re looking for smoother gameplay or a more personal experience, these five settings will help you get more out of Valve’s platform.
Schedule updates to avoid interruptions
By default, Steam may download game updates even while you’re playing, which can reduce performance during fast-paced action. To fix this, go to Downloads > Schedule auto-updates and set specific hours when updates are allowed.
Use Big Picture mode for controller gameplay
If you play with a controller, Steam’s Big Picture mode offers a more console-like interface. It enhances usability and simplifies navigation. You can enable it from Interface > Start Steam in Big Picture Mode in your settings.
Change the default startup page
Steam launches with the Store by default, but you can set it to open directly in your Library, News, Friends activity, or Community. This makes it easier to jump straight into what matters most. Go to Interface > Select which page to show at startup.
Share your game library with family
With Steam Family Sharing, other members of your household can play your games without buying them again. In Settings > Family, add family members to your group and wait for them to accept your invitation.
Join the beta program for new features
Steam’s beta versions are usually stable and give early access to upcoming tools. To enable this, go to Interface > Beta participation and select Steam Beta Update from the dropdown menu. You’ll often get to test improvements weeks in advance.
