One Piece has once again become the phenomenon of the year. If we didn’t already have enough with the success of Eiichiro Oda’s manga and anime, now Netflix has made its own live-action version that has won over audiences and critics in almost equal parts. But this hit isn’t the only pirate series worth watching.
We recently brought you Black Sails, the pirate fiction produced by Michael Bay that serves as a prequel to Treasure Island. And today we bring you another quite different pirate series: Our Flag Means Death. The second season of this series has just been announced and it’s also hilarious. So if you liked One Piece, you’ll probably like it too.

Produced by HBO Max, directed and starred (as Blackbeard) by Taika Waititi and created by David Jenkins, this series is an amalgam of luxuries and stars that works perfectly. In fact, even the Spanish director Nacho Vigalondo has directed several episodes of the first season… and it looks like he will repeat in the second.
Our Flag Means Death draws from other comedies of the style such as What We Do in the Shadows, also by Waititi, and has a very refined yet absurd humor that draws from the best of Monkey Island and, why not say it, also from One Piece. It’s funny, endearing and exciting… as well as black when it needs to be.
The story centers on Stede Bonnet, a wealthy 16th century English landowner who is going through a mid-life crisis and decides to blow up his comfortable life to become a pirate. He gives up everything to fulfill his dream, although his band is anything but ordinary. Undoubtedly, this is a very different proposal that will make you smile if you still have a pirate monkey.
