On August 24, the digital event Pixel Arcadia was held. Many retro games, or games with retro aesthetics and gameplay, were announced there, aimed at fans of games from 30 years ago and earlier. Among the many games they showed, one in particular stood out among PC gaming fans. Because they announced an enhanced version of an absolute classic from the late 90s: Sanitarium.
A classic of horror adventures
Developed by DreamForge Entertainment, this is a psychological horror adventure that puts us in the shoes of a man who wakes up one day in a psychiatric hospital without knowing what has happened. As he navigates his subconscious, exploring the depths of his mind, he must discover everything his mind is trying to repress whether it’s for his own good or not. Winning the Best Adventure of the Year award and regarded as a cult classic, both in its genre and in video games in general, it’s a game beloved by PC gamers of the time.
Although Sanitarium has never stopped being available, this new version will bring some major improvements. The biggest change is an upgrade to the graphics. With native high-resolution support, the game will look better than ever. On top of that, they’ve confirmed that it will include quality-of-life improvements, extra material never before seen, and also, for the first time, full support for playing with a controller.
While it still doesn’t have an official release date, this enhanced version of Sanitarium is set to launch at some point in 2026. And with only three months of the year left, it’s fair to assume we’ll know the date soon. Coming to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Switch, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, there’s no excuse not to return to one of the creepiest and most cerebral classics of Western adventure games.
