Donald Trump shared a proposed “next generation” U.S. Space Force service dress uniform in a new Truth Social post, and the Starship Troopers reference set off an immediate backlash online. The image he posted isn’t part of any official U.S. Space Force uniform rollout. It’s a speculative mock-up.
The concept graphic described the look as being inspired by the “discipline and functionality of the Starship Trooper uniform” for the “guardians of the space domain.” It showed a “space gray” and “midnight black” design, complete with epaulettes and knee-high leather boots. A lot of critics said it looked less like an actual U.S. military uniform and more like polished sci-fi villain gear.
If you know Paul Verhoeven’s 1997 film Starship Troopers, it’s pretty easy to see why that reference went over so badly. Critics and audiences have long read the movie as a satire of fascism and militarism. Its imagery is meant as critique, and the uniforms were designed to call up Nazi SS aesthetics. Using that costume as a style reference struck a lot of people as tone-deaf, authoritarian-looking, and much closer to dystopian fiction than formal service dress.
And this matters too: it isn’t an official new U.S. Space Force uniform. It’s a speculative mock-up, and it’s highly unlikely to be adopted. The branch already has a dark navy service dress uniform with a diagonal line of six buttons, a nod to its place as the sixth military branch, after earlier comparisons to Star Trek and Guardians of the Galaxy.
