Marvel Comics’ Iron Man #9 settles the question: Happy Hogan is alive, and the armored Citizen V is none other than Tony Stark’s old friend, bodyguard, and chauffeur.
The reveal lands in the middle of a fight with two different Whiplash villains in the 2026 issue by Joshua Williamson, Carmen Carnero, and Nolan Woodard. It puts an end to months of guessing and brings back a major Earth-616 character who had, for all practical purposes, been absent since the Civil War period in 2006. Happy Hogan’s death carried real weight in that earlier stretch of Marvel continuity. Spymaster jumped him, Happy threw the villain off a balcony to protect Tony Stark and Pepper Potts, and survived only to be left in a vegetative state. Later, at Pepper Potts’ request and in keeping with what Happy Hogan wanted, Tony Stark made the call to end his life support.
So this isn’t just another comics fake-out. It pulls one of Tony Stark’s bleakest decisions back into view. And using the Citizen V identity, a name loaded with Baron Zemo and Thunderbolts history, also gives Happy Hogan a part that reaches beyond Tony Stark’s immediate circle with Pepper Potts and James “Rhodey” Rhodes.
If you’ve been keeping up with Iron Man, this is an issue worth picking up, especially because there’s a little Marvel Cinematic Universe echo here too, where Jon Favreau’s Happy Hogan never vanished in quite the same way.
Iron Man #9 is out now from Marvel Comics.
