Apple TV+’s Dark Matter just got a pretty strong public nod from Hugh Howey, the Wool author whose work also became Apple TV+’s Silo. On Threads, Howey didn’t hedge: “Get on it, people! The best show airing right now.”
That carries some weight if you keep up with Apple TV+’s sci-fi run. Howey is already closely linked to the platform through Silo, and he’s been vocal before about how well Apple handles the genre. In a Reddit AMA, he said Apple is “killing it” with sci-fi, and specifically pointed to For All Mankind and Severance.
Dark Matter is based on Blake Crouch’s 2016 novel and follows physicist Jason Dessen, the Box, and a tangled maze of alternate realities. The cast moves through those intersecting timelines with Joel Edgerton, Jennifer Connelly, Alice Braga, Jimmi Simpson, Dayo Okeniyi, Amanda Brugel, Chris Diamantopoulos, and Oakes Fegley all in the mix.
There’s also more coming. Season 2 will go past the events of Crouch’s novel, but Crouch created the series and is still the showrunner. At the same time, Apple TV+ keeps leaning harder into sci-fi with Severance returning for a second season, For All Mankind heading into a fifth, Star City on the way, and Silo being built out as a multi-season franchise.
If cerebral sci-fi is your thing, Dark Matter is well worth a look. It’s streaming on Apple TV+.
