Last week EA decided to shut down Bioware. A legendary studio behind video games like Baldur’s Gate, Dragon’s Age, or Mass Effect, fans have been mourning its loss ever since. It was shut down because it’s considered unprofitable after the company’s acquisition by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund and the investment funds Silver Lake and Affinity Partners. EA is now facing a multimillion-dollar debt that it will hardly be able to deal with in the future.
Disappointed fans
All of this was accompanied by the leak of a trailer for a hypothetical new Mass Effect installment. This further stirred the emotions of fans who were still mourning the loss of the studio. This has led them to take concrete action in an attempt to save it. Or at least save what they can.
Fans have created a petition on change.org to try to save the Mass Effect franchise. Under the slogan #SaveMassEffect, they already have more than 200,000 verified signatures. The goal isn’t to stop EA from closing BioWare, but to keep Mass Effect going. To that end, they state that “we urgently ask EA to take decisive action and commit to continuing to develop Mass Effect. As an alternative, EA could consider licensing the Mass Effect intellectual property to another studio that shares the passion and vision needed to keep the franchise alive and allow it to thrive again”
While what will happen to Mass Effect and BioWare’s other franchises is still up in the air, this petition may perhaps help make EA aware of their historical and economic value. Still, with the new management it’s hard to know how this will play out after so much disappointment and pain for fans.
