Aaron Sorkin is set to return to the world of Facebook with a sequel to his Oscar-winning film, The Social Network.

Titled The Social Network Part II, the film will be produced by Sony Pictures and aims to delve into the societal repercussions of Facebook’s actions as revealed in the Wall Street Journal’s 2021 investigation, “The Facebook Files”.

This inquiry claimed that Facebook was aware of various issues on its platforms that had caused real-world harm but chose to maintain the status quo.

Jesse Eisenberg Expresses Interest in Reprising His Role as Zuckerberg

Sorkin has expressed strong views on Facebook’s role in increasing societal divisiveness, mentioning that he holds the platform responsible for events such as the January 6th insurrection.

He believes that Facebook’s algorithms are designed to promote divisive content to keep users engaged, a situation he describes as prioritizing growth over integrity. These controversial themes are expected to be at the forefront of the sequel, offering a critical look at the tech giant’s impact on modern society.

While Sorkin will write and direct the film, he will be doing so without director David Fincher, who helmed the original. However, Jesse Eisenberg has shown interest in reprising his role as Mark Zuckerberg. In previous interviews, Eisenberg noted the rarity of playing a complex character in such a widely recognized project, expressing enthusiasm about the opportunity for a sequel.

The original Social Network, released in 2010, was based on Ben Mezrich’s book, The Accidental Billionaires. It earned eight Academy Award nominations, winning three, including Best Adapted Screenplay for Sorkin. As anticipation builds for this follow-up, audiences are eager to see how Sorkin’s sharp writing will tackle the ongoing conversation about technology and ethics.
