AirPods 4 vs AirPods Pro: This is how the new Apple headphones compare in features, performance, and battery life

Since its launch, Apple has changed the landscape of wireless headphones by offering different AirPod models. Now, with the arrival of iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro and with the new AirPods 4 approaching in features and design to the AirPods Pro, there is a question in the air: What sets the Pro models apart from the others? In some aspects, although in much fewer than before the arrival of the fourth generation of AirPods, let’s talk about the differences.

Design and comfort: a matter of personal taste

The AirPods 4 and the AirPods Pro share the already iconic design of Apple’s headphones, although with some differences. The AirPods 4, although with a similar ergonomic design, do not have the silicone ear tips that the AirPods Pro offer. Interchangeable silicone tips that provide a more personalized fit and, of course, better noise isolation.

It is precisely these tips that make up the most significant difference between both headphones. This is not only in the functions that rely on their existence, which we will see now, but also in the comfort to the ear.

Finishing with the design section, the AirPods 4 are also more compact and lightweight, making them very comfortable to use for long periods of time. From the 4.3 grams of the AirPods 4, we go to the 5.3 grams of the AirPods Pro 2. This is a minor difference, but not unnoticed either.

Noise cancellation and sound modes: a clear advantage for the Pro

One of the most outstanding features of the AirPods Pro is the active noise cancellation (ANC), something that was unique to these headphones until now and now also comes to the AirPods 4. The ANC of the AirPods Pro is simply exceptional for blocking external noises, making them an ideal option for noisy environments such as offices or public transportation.

In Apple’s documentation, the company states that the AirPods Pro can cancel twice as much noise as the AirPods 4. The difference that the ear tip provides in terms of sealing is something that we cannot overlook.

Beyond this, features such as transparency mode, adaptive audio, and conversational awareness are present in all headphones thanks to the H2 chip.

Sound quality: a question with a clear favorite

Both the AirPods 4 and the AirPods Pro offer very balanced sound quality, with a focus on mids and highs that provides a clear and crisp listening experience. However, even with the redesign of the speakers of the AirPods 4, the AirPods Pro stand out for their deep bass and low-frequency response, which offer a very rich and complete sound experience.

In this aspect, both headphones are very evenly matched. However, once again, the complete sealing of the ear canal that the silicone tip can offer makes the performance of the AirPods Pro, in principle, superior. We will have to wait for the first tests to get a clear idea of this point.

Performance, battery and small details: similar, but with some differences

Regarding battery life, AirPods 4 offer up to 5 hours of continuous playback on a single charge, while AirPods Pro stay at approximately 6 hours with active noise cancellation. Both models come with charging cases that extend the total duration up to 30 hours.

In terms of performance, both devices use Apple’s H2 chip, which ensures a fast and stable connection with other devices and excellent integration with the Apple ecosystem. However, when it comes to control, it is worth noting that while on the AirPods Pro, we can adjust the volume by sliding our finger along the earpiece stem, this is not an option on the AirPods 4.

There are some details about the charging case. While the basic model of AirPods 4 does not have wireless charging, the noise-canceling AirPods 4 case does. The case has the same speakers for the Find My app as the version for AirPods Pro. In the case of the Pro models, we can add a cord to hang them, while in the case of AirPods 4, this is not an option.

Price: a factor to consider

We finish with the price. The AirPods 4 are more affordable. The entry-level model is $129, and the noise-cancelling model is $179. Meanwhile, the AirPods Pro 2 is $249.

It is clear that the AirPods 4 raise the stakes. Inheriting many of the distinctive features of the AirPods Pro, these headphones are presented as an exciting option. One that, without the advantage of the ear tips – possibly the most personal point to consider in terms of comfort – offers us the audio quality and features that Apple headphones have accustomed us to.
