Amazon has decided to terminate Freevee, its free ad-supported video service. After nearly five years in operation, Freevee will cease to function in the coming weeks and all its content will become part of Prime Video.
Variety has reported statements from a representative of Amazon, who stated that “to offer a simpler viewing experience to customers, we have decided to gradually phase out the Freevee brand. There will be no change in the content available to Prime members.” The representative continues explaining that the “extensive offering of free streaming content will remain accessible to non-Prime members, which includes originals from Amazon MGM Studios, a variety of licensed movies and series, and a wide library of FAST channels, all available on Prime Video.”
So yes: those who are not part of Prime will be able to enjoy Freevee content, which will carry the label “Watch for Free“. Among its most notable series are Jury Duty, Bosch: Legacy, and the second season of Alex Rider, among many others. There were also many original Prime movies and documentaries, such as Lizzo’s Watch Out for the Big Grrrls, The Wheel of Time, or Reacher.
Originally launched as IMDb TV in January 2019, it was rebranded as Freevee in 2022 and was available in the United States, United Kingdom, and Germany. Instead of having subscriptions, the service allowed users to watch series and movies in exchange for viewing ads. Since Amazon began including advertising within Prime Video offerings, rumors about a possible withdrawal of Freevee continued to grow. Finally, these rumors have turned into reality.
