Android has started adding real protections against fake cell towers, but there isn’t a single hidden switch that turns all of it on, and not every Android phone supports the full set of anti-surveillance features.
Stingrays, also called IMSI-catchers, pose as legitimate cell towers so your phone connects to them. Once it does, the operator can potentially track the device, force it onto weaker 2G service, and sometimes even intercept texts or calls. Starting with Android 12, supported phones can disable 2G at the modem level.
Android 14 added another safeguard against null-cipher connections, which lets the phone block unencrypted cellular links. Privacy advocates still aren’t comfortable with the bigger picture, because law enforcement agencies use Stingrays under heavy secrecy, and that keeps Fourth Amendment concerns front and center.
Whether you get these protections comes down to two things: your Android version and the modem and radio hardware inside the phone. Older or cheaper models may not have either one.
Android 16 is expected to make this more visible by adding clearer alerts for suspicious or unencrypted networks, including IMSI requests.
If you use Android all the time, take a minute to look for these settings. On supported phones, you’ll usually find them under Network or SIM settings.
