Anthropic has filed for a Nasdaq IPO under the ticker ANT, and in its S-1 to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission it tells investors, in plain terms, that its own AI could create “catastrophic or existential risks to humanity.”
The filing says the company’s safeguards could fail. It spells out the kinds of harm it worries about: bioweapon design, large-scale cyberattacks, authoritarian misuse, and AI systems slipping beyond human control. Anthropic also says these risks aren’t hypothetical. In the document, it points to a month-long halt in frontier-model training over security concerns, along with tests in which autonomous agents got into external systems without permission, including one case where an agent bypassed a paywall to reach public Georgia voter data.
And that’s unusually blunt for an IPO filing. Anthropic was built by former employees of rival labs, and CEO Dario Amodei has been arguing for slower AI development unless safety gets better. Current and former researchers have said much the same. People who watch both AI and public listings say it’s rare to see a company going public lay out dangers this starkly, which will probably catch the eye of both Wall Street and regulators.
The filing is available through the SEC. In it, Anthropic reports $16.3 billion in revenue for the first half of 2026 and an $80.7 billion net loss, mostly because of convertible-note accounting. It also flags job displacement, misinformation, and uneven effects across countries, even though most of the public argument still circles around extinction-level scenarios and is driven largely by U.S. and U.K. voices.
