Anthropic’s $1.5 billion book piracy settlement wins final approval

Anthropic’s $1.5 billion settlement with authors got final approval on July 20, 2026. A same-day order from US District Judge Araceli Martínez-Olguín in San Francisco signed off on the deal and closed out one of the biggest copyright cases the tech industry has faced so far.

The July 20, 2026 order approves the San Francisco settlement in Bartz v. Anthropic. Both sides called it the largest copyright recovery in US history. The case started in 2024 as a class action brought by Andrea Bartz, Charles Graeber, and Kirk Wallace Johnson, and it covers about 500,000 works tied to downloads from LibGen and Pirate Library Mirror.

By the numbers, the settlement works out to roughly $3,000 per infringed book. Court filings also show that Anthropic agreed to settle in September 2025, after facing piracy claims that could have led to statutory damages in the hundreds of billions.

The big split in the case came from Judge William Alsup’s June 2025 ruling. He found that training on legally purchased books counted as fair use, while pirated copies did not. Anthropic says this settlement deals only with the piracy claims and doesn’t change that earlier fair-use ruling.

Because this was a settlement and not a verdict, it doesn’t bind other courts. Even so, it sends a pretty clear warning about using pirated training data.

Martínez-Olguín also looked over the fees, reserves, and service awards. She cut about $86 million from the fee request, and the deal reportedly requires Anthropic to destroy pirated books still in its possession.
