All those who have used virtual reality or augmented reality glasses (or Mixed Reality, as is the case with Vision Pro) know that it can make you dizzy… or it can cause dizziness. Seeing things that are not really there is a process that not everyone is prepared for.
It is no coincidence that in recent days there has been an increase in users on social media saying they are going to return their $3,500 Vision Pro glasses.
Fortunately, Apple allows you to return any product within 14 days from the date of purchase, and in the case of the first wave of Vision Pro buyers, we are right at that point.
A problem with many facets
And comfort is one of the most cited reasons for returns. People have said that the glasses cause them headaches and dizziness. The weight of the device, and the fact that most of it is loaded in the front, has been another complaint.
This is not surprising. Every human body is unique, which poses a problem when scaling the production of wearables for a potential market of millions of people.
Comfort is inevitably sacrificed, and it affects people disproportionately. In the case of smartwatches, it often comes down to the size and weight of the case compared to the wrist.
In the case of smart rings, it’s the finger size. Unfortunately, many people don’t have the same size or have problems with finger swelling.
In the case of VR/AR glasses, having a low nose bridge can cause the device to slip off your face or not block light properly.
However, hardware is not the only problem. Another common complaint is that the Vision Pro does not offer enough productivity in relation to its price. A user pointed out in Threads that looking at Figma screens made them dizzy, but that the device was also not applicable to their work.
Another engineer wrote on Twitter that the “coding experience failed to convince him” and that the focus issues gave him headaches.
What will happen to Vision Pro and incompatible users
It is difficult to know how this subgroup of users will affect Vision Pro in the future. Many of those who said they would return the device also pointed out that they would be eager to try a second generation of Vision Pro.
Others pointed out that the problem was not the technology, but the lack of a revolutionary or convenient application. It is also difficult to know to what extent this is a widespread phenomenon.
While these users express themselves on social media, we have no idea about the actual return rate or Apple’s internal expectations for the Vision Pro.
