Apple Maps still hadn’t switched Lake Ontario to “Lake America” in the latest public reports, even after President Donald Trump reportedly asked Apple Inc. to make the change. The request is part of a broader White House effort to bring consumer mapping platforms in line with U.S. government naming.
That push comes after an executive order from Trump telling federal agencies to use the new name, similar to the earlier “Gulf of America” change. Lake Ontario is a different case, though. It sits on the border between the U.S. and Canada, and the rename is arriving in the middle of a wider trade fight, which is why a lot of people read it as political theater more than a real geographic shift.
Google Maps has already made the change for users in the U.S. In Canada, it still shows “Lake Ontario,” and reports say users in other places see both names. Apple Maps, by contrast, still hadn’t changed it in the latest publicly available reports. MapQuest has also said it won’t adopt the new name.
Canadian officials aren’t budging. Ontario Premier Doug Ford, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, and Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly have all said the name is staying as it is. Critics have also pointed out that “Ontario” comes from a Wendat word, which gives the whole dispute another layer of cultural weight.
If you rely on Apple Maps every day, there’s no update here you need to install for this yet. Still, it’s something to keep an eye on, because a politically charged rename could affect what appears on your screen.
