How to get free apps from the App Store

Just like any product would, apps frequently go on sale, often being offered for free for a limited period of time. If you’d rather get paid apps for free (and let’s be honest, who wouldn’t), here are some really simple tips that you can use to get some really cool apps and games without spending a single dollar.

Don’t miss the App Store promotions

Every day, promotions on Apple’s App Store allow people to buy apps and games at a discounted price. As a part of these daily promotions, certain paid games become free for a limited amount of time. If there’s a game that you’re interested in, all you have to do is wait and download it at the right time, and you’ll have the game forever on your iOS device without ever reaching for your wallet.

To make sure you don’t miss these temporary promotions, visit the App Store frequently and look at the top free apps. You can also install an app tracker like the excellent Apps Gone Free. This app gives you daily notifications about promotions, telling you which apps are free or discounted.

Free iOS games

Apps Gone Free will help you save money on iOS games

Follow websites

Quite often, websites set up special promotions where you can win promo codes for games. Follow your favorite sites through social networks to stay on the lookout for bargains.

The most recent example of this is the Free Game of the Month from IGN. Each month, you can pick a free promo code to use in the App Store. Some of the games that have been offered since the promotion started include Need for Speed: Most Wanted, Deus Ex: The Fall, Batman Arkham City Lockdown, Infinity Blade II, and even The Walking Dead: Season 2 Episode 1.

Download the Apple Store app

Apple regularly offers free content through its Apple Store app (not to be confused with the built-in App Store on your device). Install the app on your iOS device and enable notifications so that you don’t miss out on limited time promotions. The first paid game it ever offered for free was Color Zen in August 2013, saving customers a whopping $0.99.

Wait for the Holidays

Since 2008, Apple celebrates the holiday season by giving away gifts on iTunes between late December and early January. In 2013, people were able to get the paid games Toca House, Mr. Crab, and Rayman Jungle Run all for free!

Fortunately, it’s quite likely that Apple will continue doing this promotion at the end of each year. To make sure you don’t miss out on this bonanza of free games, install an app called 12 Days of Gifts from the App Store as soon as the holiday season comes around (mid-December). Once it’s installed, check it every day from December 26 so that you don’t miss out on any apps.

Participate in Beta Test programs

With iOS 8, developers can invite users to test beta versions of their games and apps. Specifically, if you participate in these test programs, you may be lucky enough to play some paid games for free.

Be careful, however; apps in beta are often unstable and have a limited time period. If, on the other hand, you’re not bothered by any of these details, you can start following your favorite developers on social networks so that you’re ready when they need volunteers. To get your foot in the door, try the Twitter profiles of successful mobile video games studios:

If you’re a bargain hunter and prefer to wait until games go free, just remember one little word: patience.

The best Android app for listening to music– Sam’s choice

What’s the best music player on Android? Personally, I’ve been using audio streaming services instead of local playback for quite some time now. I was in love with Spotify when the inevitable happened.

An obscure song I wanted to hear wasn’t available. Initially, Google Play Music, the official app from Google, was enough to keep me going. However, after a brief period, the limitations of the app encouraged me to search for an alternative. This began my quest for the perfect audio player on Android, which I found in Shuttle Music Player.

The best app

Shuttle Music Player

Shuttle Music PlayerLet me be clear: Google Play Music isn’t a bad music player. Google’s music app, however, only offers basic functions. Fortunately, Shuttle Music Player builds on the strengths of Google Play Music and adds useful, everyday features.

Shuttle takes interface cues from Google Play Music, and it’s on-screen displays are almost identical to Play Music. The music player isn’t hindered by elaborate menus or outdated interfaces either, like many other apps are. In fact, Shuttle Music Player stands out for being extremely easy to use.

Shuttle Music Player

Shuttle’s menus are clear and easy to navigate

Shuttle Music Player doesn’t stop there though. The app goes a step further by adding useful features that quickly become essential. Shuttle automatically finds artwork for your albums, has seamless playback, and allows you to save songs as ringtones in just a few clicks.

Shuttle is very customizable and versatile giving you the option to choose between several themes to customize your display. You can also modify the sound of your songs by accessing an easy-to-use equalizer.

Shuttle Music Player isn’t the sharpest or most complete music player for Android, but the app definitely combines the most useful features for ordinary people in an intuitive and readable interface that’s very convenient for day-to-day use. And the best part? The free version of Shuttle Music Player is perfectly usable, a relatively rare feature among apps in this category.

Download Shuttle Music Player

The rising stars

Ironically, Shuttle Music Player’s simplicity could be the very thing that leads to its downfall. The app could get surpassed by newer audio players with more functionality. The apps below stand out for their innovative features and are some promising alternatives to keep an eye on.

musiXmatch

MusiXmatch

I have to admit I was very impressed with musicXmatch. Against all my expectations, this app for viewing lyrics is also an excellent audio player. The app is surely one of the best looking in its category, combining elegant design with traditional musiXmatch features: viewing lyrics, artist information, and even an amazing karaoke mode.

Download musiXmatch

doubleTwist Player

doubleTwist Player

The power of doubleTwist Player lies in its options, which unfortunately you have to pay for. The free version is fairly well designed and fully functional, but for a few extra bucks, you can turn it into a powerhouse for music lovers. You’re able to synchronize music via Wi-Fi, stream on Apple TV, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3, download album art, and have some fun with a mean looking equalizer.

Download doubleTwist Player

Remember, Pandora and Spotify aren’t the be all and end all of music players; if you’re looking for a simple music player that works well with an already huge catalog of music, try Shuttle Music Player. Of course, don’t forget the alternatives, musiXmatch and doubleTwist Player, for a bit more variety.

The best map app for Android – Sam’s Choice

Some people, myself included, have a poor sense of direction and get stressed out by maps. Fortunately, there are multiple navigation apps that make it difficult to get completely lost. As I transitioned to Android, I naturally put my faith in Google Maps. After all, it has a very good reputation and in the beginning, no other app really came close.

Then on one miserable, rainy day a location error meant I ended up walking though the mud and pouring rain. That day, I began looking for a replacement mapping app. Looking at features such as recommendations, offline mode, turn-by-turn navigation, public transport schedules, and traffic updates, I reviewed different apps in this category to save you time. My findings were quite surprising.

The best app

Google Maps

Google MapsWith nine years under its belt, Google Maps remains the undisputed master of GPS apps, especially on mobile platforms. Google Maps offers everything we could expect from a modern day atlas. The app displays accurate and updated maps of any location in the world. It lets you find the exact location of an address and plan out routes for traveling on foot, by car, or public transportation. However, what makes Google Maps stand out is the bunch of additional features that Google has added over the years.

Google Maps

Recommendations, turn-by-turn navigation, Street View Maps. Its strength lies in its additional features.

Google Maps is more than just a simple navigation app. It gives you the option to walk around the streets of major cities with Street View. The Google Maps Indoor feature lets you display the interior of certain buildings. You can also get recommendations on nearby shops and updates on traffic status. The app makes motorists’ lives easier by providing turn-by-turn navigation and lane guidance in the latest update. Another major feature is its ability to save maps offline, perfect for trips abroad or when using the subway.

Google Maps is the champion of navigation on Android. Its accurate maps, powerful search engine, and nine years of innovation in the cartography field make it a safe bet.

Download Google Maps for Android.

The rising stars

Google’s supremacy in mobile navigation has not prevented other competitors from emerging. Unlike Google Maps, the following GPS apps are both dedicated to specific uses. With good designs and innovative concepts, these alternatives apps are becoming major competitors for Google Maps.

Moovit

moovitMoovit’s speciality is public transport. Based on the free map application OpenStreetMap, this app is designed to help you get around by bus, subway, or train. In addition to its powerful route planning features, Moovit also allows you to check schedules and traffic information in real time using data provided by its users. Moovit is often more effective and comprehensive than Google Maps for public of transport and covers more than 350 cities. A promising app to have in your smartphone!

Download Moovit for Android.

Waze

wazeWaze is a motorist’s best friend. The application offers enhanced roadmaps with user-generated alerts. Whether its accidents, traffic jams, or nearby police, the members of the Waze community will alert you about events that could cost you time (and maybe even money). This successful app with great potential hasn’t gone unnoticed by Google, which bought the app  in June 2013. If expanded Waze alerts are integrated into Google Maps like nearby police, the resulting app will be ridiculously effective in making life easier for drivers.

Download Waze for Android.

Now all you need to do is download Google Maps if the app is not already preinstalled on your Android phone. After all, your smartphone deserves the best, right? If you think another app is better, please don’t hesitate to share with us by leaving a comment. Do you have Google Maps on your phone but are not sure how to use it correctly?

The best email app for Android – Sam’s choice

What is the best email client on Android? Although this category has been long dominated by well known clients, independent alternatives have emerged. New apps, full of good ideas, are shaking things up.

If you’re like me, then you want the very best for your Android smartphone. I reviewed the newbies and the most popular email apps to get my hands on the best email app available.

The best app

myMail

myMailOf course, no email app is perfect. However MyMail manages to combine innovation, good practical ideas, design, accessibility, and reliability. This app is compatible with most email services (Gmail, Outlook.com, Yahoo !, etc.), it is easy to learn and you can view and respond to your emails with ease.

myMail is well designed and combines business with pleasure by automatically displaying avatars of people or companies that you are writing to. It’s also practical because it makes it easier to organize your messages: with a glance, you can see the author of each message and can choose to mark it as important or throw it in the trash.

myMail

MyMail allows you to manage your mailbox with ease

Even better, myMail is based on gestures that allow you to manage your mailbox quickly. While viewing your list of messages, a swipe to the left will bring up a list of buttons showing basic functions (mark as unread, move to trash, report as spam). Within a message, the same gesture allows you to move to the next message.

However, myMail doesn’t stop there. With this app you can disable notifications at set times and even decide which messages can activate them. It’s quite practical if you want to avoid being hassled by unwanted mail from forums or social networks.

Ultimately, myMail’s strength is its clever blend of innovative features and accessibility.

Download myMail

The rising stars

The following email applications stand out thanks to unique design or innovative features. Some of these competitors have great potential and should be watched.

Blue Mail

Blue MailBlue Mail is the best alternative to myMail that’s currently available on Android. Although it’s a little more pro-oriented than myMail, the app excels when it comes to task management. In just a few clicks, you can plan how you organize your most important emails and find the functions you need within menus that are clear and easy to understand. To top it off, Blue Mail is particularly effective in adapting your emails to your smartphone screen so that it’s easier to read.

Download Blue Mail

Mailbox

MailboxThis email app recently acquired by Dropbox, is full of good ideas. The single problem that limits its potential number of users is requiring a Dropbox account. To make things worse, Mailbox is currently only compatible with Gmail and iCloud accounts. All this with an interface that’s slightly too minimalist gives you an email app that has huge potential, but would be a lot better if it was more accessible.

Download Mailbox

Nine

Nine Nine is possibly one of the best professional email clients available on Android. It is well-designed, stylish, sturdy, and full of great ideas such as displaying e-mails as chats, or the option to disable notifications at specific times. Unfortunately, this app is not aimed at the general public. Nine is only compatible with Exchange, Microsoft’s email protocol.

Download Nine

CloudMagic

CloudMagic CloudMagic compensates for its plainness by focusing on the robustness of its search engine and security. It allows you to lock the application or the email account of your choice with an additional password for greater security. However, CloudMagic is also distinguished by a few innovations to keep an eye on.

For example, the card system displays shortcuts to compatible applications: it’s possible to save an email to Evernote, Pocket, or OneNote in one click. Even better, the application will display information about the email’s sender if it’s publicly available on the web. With a few simple modifications this app could quickly change the game.

Download CloudMagic

All that’s left for you to do is install myMail and enjoy the best email client available for Android. Your smartphone deserves the best after all! And if you prefer to use a different app, please don’t hesitate to share with us by leaving a comment.

How to export photos from iPhoto to Google Drive, Dropbox, or OneDrive

Having been a Mac user for almost 10 years, I’ve always trusted iPhoto to keep my pictures organized. But, after having a computer and two Android phones stolen, I decided to find a solution that was more flexible.

That’s when I decided to try storing my pictures in Google+ Photos via Google Drive, a solution for saving, organizing, editing, and sharing photos.

Because all my photos were previously stored in my iPhoto library, I had to find an easy way to export my collection without losing my metadata (GPS position, date picture taken, etc.) or photo organization by albums and events. Unfortunately, the export photo function in iPhoto is not designed to export entire libraries, and it destroys metadata files in the process.

On the verge of giving up, I came across Phoshare, an app designed specifically for this situation.

Note: This tutorial can be used to export an iPhoto library to any cloud storage service like Box, Dropbox or OneDrive.

1. Download Phoshare

First you need to download Phoshare. The app works with iPhoto ’06, iPhoto ’08, iPhoto ’09, and iPhoto ’11 on Mac OS X Mountain Lion, Lion, Snow Leopard, Leopard, and Tiger.

Download Phoshare for Mac

2. Unzip and run

Once you download the file, unzip it into a folder of your choice. Then, run the application. To learn more about decompressing files and launching applications, see the Apple help articles.

Warning: If you use Mountain Lion, you may have to disable GateKeeper to launch the application. Find out how in this tutorial.

3. Go to Library

Click on the Files tab. Phoshare will automatically select the default location of your iPhoto library, but if you want to export more than one library, or if you’ve changed the location manually, you can select the correct file by clicking the Browse button. Otherwise, go to the next step.

Phoshare Export iPhoto to Google+, Google Photos, Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive

4. Go to Files

Click on the Files tab, then click the Browse button to choose the location your photos will be exported to.

Tip: You can check the box marked Export originals so that Phoshare exports your original files without any modifications made in iPhoto.

Phoshare Export iPhoto to Google+, Google Photos, Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive

5. Go to Metadata

Click on the Metadata tab.choose what metadata to export. Check the box marked Export metadata to export date picture taken, descriptions, keywords, and notes.

If you want to export GPS data, check the Export GPS data box. To save the information about recognized faces in your photos, you can tick the boxes marked Copy faces into metadata and Copy face names into keywords.

Warning: the duration of the extraction depends on the number of files and the size of your iPhoto library. Allow about 2 hours for every 10,000 pictures.

Phoshare Export iPhoto to Google+, Google Photos, Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive

6. Export

You can now click on the Export button to start the extraction from your iPhoto library.

Warning: the duration of the extraction depends on the number of files and the size of your iPhoto library. Allow about 2 hours for every 10,000 pictures.

Phoshare Export iPhoto to Google+, Google Photos, Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive

7. Copy the Folder

Once your iPhoto library is exported, you can copy the folder of exported to your favorite storage space. The time it takes to upload your photos onto your storage space depends on the size of your library and the speed of your internet connection

Tip: You can check in advance that you have enough online storage space by displaying the information of the folder your library has been exported to: Select the folder containing your photos by clicking on it. Then click on File and click Get Info.

Whether or not you’re a fan of iPhoto, it might still be a good idea to get your photos out of the app: Apple might be about to abandon it.

If you want to stop using the app but you prefer to keep your photos on your hard drive instead of in the cloud, you can also try one of these five alternatives to iPhoto.

The best web browser for Android – Sam’s choice

If you feel limited by the default browser installed on your smartphone, it’s time to switch to a superior alternative. Luckily, I’ve tested both the heavy hitters and the newcomers in this category to save you time.

I’ve been an advocate of Google’s Chrome browser, but it’s clear that Chrome has taken a a few knocks recently. Even now, the browser struggles when running on a PC, and it feels almost ancient when compared to its new challengers on Android. Chrome has a dated design, questionable ergonomics, zero customization, and weak security options.

Focusing on more than just performance, I looked at the practicality and user experience of various mobile browsers in my investigation. After much debate, the final verdict is:

The best application

Dolphin Browser

dolphin browserDolphin Browser for Android is amazing because it really has something for everyone. It incorporates technology that renders it ten times more efficient than the default Android browser (according to its developers). Without going into unnecessary technical details, Dolphin Browser feels significantly more responsive than its current competitors.

Versatile and customizable, Dolphin Browser has extensions that allow you to adapt the browsing experience to your needs by adding useful features. My favorite? The Dolphin Float extension, which opens links without leaving your current application.

Even better, you can also customize the interface of the browser by choosing one of the many themes available, or by using the background of your choice.

Dolphin Browser

On the left, the sidebar menu and its extensions. On the right, the theme selection screen.

Dolphin Browser doesn’t lack in security either. The app will let skeptics browse with the anonymous search engine DuckDuckGo, use a master password, or erase their history when closing the browser.

Ultimately, the app is full of good ideas like navigational gestures and a night mode that transforms the appearance of web pages to reduce eye fatigue. You can also send pages from your mobile to your computer by installing the Dolphin Connect extension on Chrome, Firefox, or Safari.

All this added to the experimental Flash support, and you have the real Rolls Royce of Android web browsers.

Download Dolphin Browser

The rising stars

Dolphin Browser could very well be quickly caught up by the competition. The following browsers stand out for their unique designs and innovative features. Watch closely for these competitors with huge potential.

CM Browser

CM BrowserAfter focusing on the maintenance of Android devices, the creators of Clean Master launched their attack on web browsers with CM Browser, which focuses on security and user-friendliness. Very fast, light and easy to handle, CM Browser is an excellent alternative to Dolphin Browser.

Download CM Browser

Javelin Browser

Javelin Browser Javelin Browser is perhaps the most innovative browser in this selection. The app radically challenges the norm using practical and everyday functions. Between the full screen display, the ad-blocker, and tool tips that open links in the background display, Javelin is simply amazing– a very promising browser indeed.

Download Javelin Browser

Firefox

FirefoxAfter redesigning its synchronization function, the Android and PC versions of Firefox now work together. If Firefox doesn’t stand out on Android through the originality of its features or its design, Mozilla could still make a difference with its mobile browser by drawing inspiration from the PC version. After all, Firefox is the king of web browsers on Windows.

Download Firefox

If you want the best browser for your Android, I’d go with Dolphin Browser, but if you want to try something a bit out of the box, then check out one of my honorable mentions.

The best messaging app for Android – Sam’s choice

What’s the best app to send and receive text messages with Android? To save you some time, I’ve reviewed the most popular apps in this category to help you make the right choice. If, like me, you aren’t satisfied with the SMS client installed by default on your Android, I have the perfect app for you.

I’ve used Hangouts as my main SMS app for a long time. Going off of only good experiences with Google, I trusted the Mountain View giant to handle my text messages too. Unfortunately, whereas Google’s app is great for organizing video chats with friends, Hangouts doesn’t really hold up when it comes to SMS and MMS. The app jumbles your Hangout and SMS conversations without giving you the choice to separate the two, something I find extremely irritating.

Fortunately, some quick research led me to Contacts+, a true Swiss Army knife for everything related to communication on Android.

The best app

Contacts+

Messages +The first thing you’ll notice in Contacts+ is that it’s not a simple instant messaging client. The app not only includes a great address book, it also has a fancy dialer, and both have quickly replaced the default ones from Google on my Android phone.

For SMS and MMS, Contacts+ is even better. The app displays conversations in a chat format–nothing revolutionary– but Contacts+ goes a little bit further because of its perfect compatibility with social networks. In a chat window, you simply have to drag the screen to the right to access your contact’s Facebook, Twitter or Linkedin profile. Even better, with a tap, you can even switch from Contacts+ to Whatsapp or Hangouts and continue your conversation on another platform.

Messages +

Contacts+ displays your conversations as a chat

Contacts+ also caught my attention because of its ‘info bubbles‘, small windows that are superimposed on your screen when you receive a message while using another app. You don’t even have to switch to the app to read or reply to a message, a function that’s quickly become indispensable.

The best, though, is that Contacts+ lets you send free messages to other contacts using the same app, similar to Whatsapp. While it came out on top for me though, Contacts+ wasn’t the only cool app I found.

Download Contacts+

Rising stars

There are a few others messaging apps that stand out for either their design, or their innovative features. Here are some potential competitors to keep an eye on.

Hello SMS

hello smsHello SMS is an elegant SMS Manager that stands out for its sleek design and clever tab system. The app’s continuously improving with things like a new night theme, a perfect integration of emojis, and the option to share images faster and cheaper than via MMS.

Download Hello SMS

EvolveSMS

EvolveSMSEvolve SMS differs from other SMS managers thanks to its powerful personalization features. With backgrounds, text size, notifications, and customizable fonts, this app will satisfy anyone who prefers using apps with a unique look. Unlike other popular messaging clients, Evolve SMS is easy to use thanks to clear and legible menus.

Download EvolveSMS

Hangouts

HangoutsI said earlier that Hangouts doesn’t match Contacts+ when it comes to managing SMS and MMS, but the situation could soon change. According to early leaks, the next version of Android could indeed include a new version of the app that’s easier to use, making it the SMS client I know it has the potential to be.

Download Hangouts

Now, all you have to do is download Contacts+, install it, and enjoy the best SMS app currently available for Android, at least in my opinion. If you don’t agree, try one of the alternatives.

If you want to know how to deactivate Hangouts for Android in 15 seconds, we’ll show you how in this video.

Modern Combat 5: Essential tips to become unbeatable

Modern Combat is back in its fifth installment, a free interpretation of Call of Duty for tablets and smartphones. I tested a preview of Modern Combat 5 (iOS | Android | Windows Phone | Windows 8) and discovered five tips to help you get off on the right foot, giving you the information you need to start playing the game and level up quickly.

Move at turbo speed

Like any FPS, mobility is one of the keys to success in Modern Combat 5. The game’s map being significantly smaller than that of a traditional FPS means stationary targets won’t last long. Avoid standing still as much as possible. Remain a moving target to make things harder for your enemies.

Modern Combat 5 Auto-Sprint

Enable the Auto-Sprint feature to automatically run

To increase your speed, go to the Options menu.  In the Adjust Controls section, you can enable the Auto-Sprint feature, which helps you move faster.

Return grenades

Like many other FPSs currently on the market, you can return grenades in Modern Combat 5. When an opponent sends this deadly little package flying your way, don’t hesitate. Press the dedicated shortcut button to pick up the grenade and return the favor.

Modern Combat 5

Keep the shortcut button for returning grenades at hand.

To be completely ready for an attack, change the location of the grenade button, as shown above. It’s the ideal solution to fend off an aggressive attack and cause significant damage to your enemies.

Adjust the controls

To be as quick a possible, it’s best to put the most frequently used buttons as close to your thumb as possible. To adjust the controls, go to the Options menu and click Custom HUD.

Modern Combat 5Place the buttons within reach of your thumbs to always have key functions at hand.

Do as many tests in offline mode as you need to so that you can figure out the optimal configuration for buttons. If you don’t know which buttons to prioritize, take a look at the photo above and reproduce what I’ve already tried.

Boost accuracy

In multiplayer mode, precision is just as important as speed of execution. The sensitivity of your aim can be the difference between victory or a crushing defeat. Auto aim and auto shoot are disabled in multiplayer, so you’ll need to rely on your skills to hit all your targets.

Modern Combat 5

Use these settings to put the odds on your side.

Fortunately, Modern Combat 5 gives you the possibility to adjust the sensitivity of controls. Go to the Options menu, and then to the Adjust Controls option, where you can play with Sensitivity, Gyroscope Sensitivity, and Aiming Sensitivity to take advantage of optimum accuracy.

Remember to reload

Modern Combat 5

Press the button highlighted in red to reload between rounds.

There’s nothing worse than being short of ammunition during a huge confrontation. Change the layout of buttons to keep the weapons selector handy. A touch will let you reload your weapon, and if you don’t have ammo, you only have to slide your finger to instantly change weapons.

By strictly following these five tips, you’ll quickly become unbeatable in Modern Combat 5.

Which password manager should you use – 1Password, Dashlane, or LastPass?

It seems like almost every day there’s a new security breach. To protect yourself against possible infiltration, it’s strongly recommended to use complex and unique passwords and change them regularly.

This is where password managers come in. Password managers are all-in-one password tools helping you manage, create, and store your secret keys in one place under one master password.

These programs are becoming increasingly popular as hackers try to infringe on your personal data through passwords that can be cracked as easily as eggs. Here, I’ve put three of the most popular password managers to the test to help you choose the software that best suits your needs.

1Password1Password

Encryption and database

1Password uses AES-256 encryption but stores all your data locally on your computer. Even if you choose to synchronize your data with other devices, your master password, the unique decryption key, never leaves your computer or device. Decryption is always done locally and the decrypted data is never written on the disk.

With 1Password, using the cloud is an option, not a requirement. The software lets you synchronize data between devices via iCloud and Dropbox, or locally through Wifi. It’s an ideal solution for mobile users who are more cautious about the cloud.

Integration with browsers

1Password is compatible with Chrome, Firefox, Opera, and Safari. Extensions allow the app to automatically save new passwords entered in the browser and to automatically fill out forms with just one click.

1Password

Threat prevention

The Watchtower feature in 1Password identifies sites that are vulnerable to cyber attacks and tells you which passwords you should change. The app will tell you which sites to avoid, and gives you the green light to change your password after covering security holes.

Another good feature is that 1Password will also tell you if your passwords aren’t safe enough, are duplicate, or are obsolete so that you can update them.

Platforms

1Password is available for: Android | iOS | Mac | Windows | Windows Phone

dashlaneDashlane

Encryption and database

Like1Password and LastPass, Dashlane uses the AES-256 encryption for its database. The key that encrypts the data is derived from the master password: the decrypted data is not stored on your device or Dashlane’s servers.

Dashlane gives you the possibility to keep encrypted data locally on one device, or to sync it between multiple devices via Dashlane’s servers. The encrypted data is hosted on Dashlane’s servers and is downloaded and decrypted every time.

Just like Lastpass, Dashlane lets you add two-factor authentication options to enhance the security of your master password.

Integration with browsers

Dashlane is compatible with Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Safari. The application lets you import your saved passwords in Firefox or another browser.

Dashlane

Threat prevention

Dashlane sends security alerts directly to your devices when your passwords could be compromised. Dashlane also advises on the saved passwords.

Platforms

Dashlane is available for: Android | iOS | Mac | Windows

LastPassLastpass

Encryption and database

With Lastpass, all your data is encrypted locally on your PC using AES 256 encryption, and you’re the only one who can unlock it. Your key doesn’t leave your device, and it’s never shared with LastPass.

The only downside is that the program requires an internet connection because the encrypted data is hosted on LastPass servers by default. Fortunately, you can access the data without an internet connection through the LastPass Pocket app.

One good thing is that LastPass supports two-factor authentication. It’s a  practical solution to add another layer of security to the master password.

Integration with browsers

LastPass is compatible with the following browsers: Chrome, Dolphin Browser, Firefox, Firefox Mobile, Internet Explorer, Maxthon, Opera, and Safari. The app also imports existing passwords from Firefox and Internet Explorer.

LastPass

Threat prevention

LastPass offers a line of defense against phishing attacks, and it will not fill in forms hosted on malicious websites. The application also analyzes passwords to find out if they’re weak: LastPass will warn you when you’re using a weak password when logging into your accounts, and it’ll send you security alerts every time a new security breach is discovered.

Platforms

LastPass is available for: Android | BlackBerry| iOS | Linux | Mac | Windows | Windows Phone

A matter of preference

All three password managers are very similar in many ways. On a security level, they all use the AES-256 security standard and store their data locally. In the end, your preference for one or another will boil down to the additional features of each program.

Dashlane’s mobile apps will give an experience (auto-completion, generating passwords) that’s very close to what is offered for PC thanks to a dedicated keyboard on Android and a full browser on iOS.

For LastPass, it’s the unparalleled variety of available platforms what will make the difference. Of the three, this is the only one that supports Linux, BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, Symbian, and Firefox OS, an ideal choice if you’re using one of these platforms. The app, however, syncs your encrypted data on its servers by default, a solution that will discourage those who are most skeptical about cloud security.

1Password is notable for how easy it is to use and its elegant design. If you fear that you’ll end up with something indecipherable, 1Password is a good solution. This is indeed the best password manager for less advanced users, and the function that lets you sync data between devices via Wi-Fi could attract savvy users not wanting their data copied to the cloud.
