Avengers: Doomsday still hasn’t premiered, but the Russo brothers know that isn’t the only key date in the next year or so. Whether it does well or badly at the box office, by December 17, 2027 they have to have Avengers: Secret Wars completed, a movie that hadn’t even started shooting… until a few days ago! Or at least that’s what’s being said in the industry rumor mill.
Avengers, assemble! And then split up afterward!
At the recent San Diego Comic-Con, Anthony Russo said that all their efforts were focused on finishing Doomsday on time. “And after that we’re gearing up for Secret Wars. It’s a complicated but exciting moment in our lives”. And when was filming supposed to start? “Soon. So soon it’s making us sweat a little”. Well, it seems that “soon” is right now.
According to Film Base, which tracks all the shoots taking place in the UK, filming on the movie began a few weeks ago, and they’re now taking five weeks off before going back to work at the end of September. The movie is being filmed at the same time as other highly anticipated projects like The Mummy, X-Men, Naruto, Call of Duty, or the new season of Black Mirror. So if Secret Wars turns out badly, we’ll have more than enough entertainment for years.
For now we know little else, but in the coming months we should get leaks about the heroes who are in it and the ones who’ve sat out this one. If Doomsday tops $2 billion (as it should) we could be looking at the biggest hit in film history. Those who said Marvel was dead are eating their words with ketchup.
