Bohemia Interactive marked the 25th anniversary of Arma: Cold War Assault with two releases at once: the original Poseidon engine source code on GitHub, plus the announcement of a remaster.
The code covers the technology behind the 2001 game now known as Arma: Cold War Assault. It first came out as Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis, then got renamed after Bohemia Interactive split with Codemasters. Bohemia says the code is now available under the GNU GPL, with a cleaned-up codebase updated to C++20 and made compatible with 64-bit Windows and Linux.
Bohemia Interactive has also put out a free demo for the remaster on Steam. It shows widescreen support and a few other tweaks for modern PCs. The studio still hasn’t announced a final release date.
If you’re into classic PC military sims, modding, or game preservation, this is an easy update to grab. The engine code is open, but Bohemia says the original assets, textures, models, and the Arma and Operation Flashpoint trademarks are still excluded.
