Bonnie Tyler dies, the raspy voice that was the soundtrack of 50 years of pop culture

Just two simple notes are enough for many of us to start singing along to Total Eclipse of the Heart, one of the best songs (without question) in the history of music. Bonnie Tyler, on her fifth album, found the success that would define her career, but it was far from her only hit. Sadly, today we learned that we will never again hear her rough and emotional voice onstage, because she has died unexpectedly at 75 in Faro as a result of the illness she had been struggling with for years.

And I need you more than ever

Surprisingly, Tyler never won a Grammy, nor did she need to: she earned the respect of the entire industry, sold millions, and kept releasing albums until 2021, when The Best is Yet to Come came out, followed by a 38-country tour. This alone tells you a lot about the singer’s personality, an absolute and overwhelming force of nature capable of anything.

The singer provided the soundtrack to an entire generation thanks to hits like Total Eclipse of the Heart, as well as Holding Out for a Hero, It’s a Heartache, or Here She Comes. In that time, she provided the soundtrack for films like Footloose, The World Is Full of Married Men, Metropolis (in its 1984 version) or even Asterix in America.

With Tyler, we lose one of the most unique voices in history, instantly recognizable. An absolute marvel whose loss we can only mourn, hoping we someday hear a voice like hers again. Farewell, Bonnie.
