The launch of Borderlands 4 last September has sparked significant controversy among players, mainly due to performance issues across all platforms, with the PC version being the most affected. Despite achieving million-dollar sales, Take-Two Interactive acknowledged that these figures were “softer” than expected, which has left many in the community concerned about the future of the game.
The game will not be coming to Switch 2
The developers had initially scheduled the release of Borderlands 4 for the anticipated Switch 2 console on October 3, 2025. However, in recent hours, Take-Two confirmed that it has indefinitely paused the development of the Switch 2 version. This progress was interrupted in part due to the need for “additional development time” to optimize the game and improve post-launch content.
A spokesperson for Take-Two commented to Variety: “We made the difficult decision to pause the development of that version of the game. Our focus continues to be on delivering quality content for players and ongoing improvements.” The company, which still maintains a good relationship with Nintendo, has indicated that it has other titles on the way for the console, including PGA Tour 2K25 and WWE 2K26, but Borderlands 4 is not among those immediate plans.
Although it has not been definitively canceled, the future of Borderlands 4 on Switch 2 seems uncertain, with projections suggesting that there will be no release before 2027. This disappointing situation for fans reflects the complexity of optimizing a game with high expectations, and only time will tell if a suitable solution will be achieved for the Nintendo audience.
