Luke Grimes, who plays Kayce Dutton on Yellowstone, doesn’t sound like someone expecting Kevin Costner to return now that the show’s final season wrapped in December 2024. He said a comeback would be “cool,” but at this point he doesn’t see it happening.
Grimes said there haven’t been any talks. And since Costner’s character, John Dutton, was killed off in Yellowstone’s final season, any appearance now would almost have to come through a flashback. Grimes also said a Monica Dutton flashback would mean more to Kayce than going back to John Dutton.
So if you were still holding out hope for a John Dutton revival, this is probably the clearest sign yet that Yellowstone is focused on what’s next, not what’s behind it. Reports around Costner’s exit pointed to salary issues, Horizon scheduling, unwritten scripts, and creative disagreements. Costner later said the later seasons came with less money and even hinted at legal action. Taylor Sheridan, for his part, said he was only committed for three seasons, that Paramount wanted to keep Costner around, and that there wasn’t some huge feud, even if John Dutton’s story ended up getting cut shorter than planned.
Grimes also said he hasn’t spoken to Costner since they stopped working together in 2024, though he made clear that sounds more like two busy people going separate ways than any real bad blood.
