Reddit is facing a growing crisis: its platform is being flooded by AI-generated spam, and the irony is impossible to ignore. The source of the problem appears to be Reddit’s own decision to license its user content for AI training, creating the perfect storm of incentives for companies looking to manipulate AI outputs.
Reddit’s data deal created new incentives
In 2023, Reddit signed a $60 million deal allowing Google to use Reddit posts for AI training, while simultaneously blocking other platforms and crawlers. This exclusivity has transformed Reddit into a high-value target for brands wanting visibility in generative AI outputs. By flooding Reddit with posts filled with keywords and brand mentions, these companies hope their content gets embedded in large language models.
AI bots are generating the spam
Reddit CEO Steve Huffman confirmed that advertisers are now deploying AI bots to post promotional content, effectively gaming the system to influence how their products appear in chatbot responses. According to Huffman, Reddit has become an indirect gateway into search engines and LLMs alike — a trend that began long before AI, but which has now escalated sharply.
A self-inflicted challenge
Reddit’s move to monetize its data has opened the door to the very abuse it now tries to control. Huffman admits the company is in “an arms race,” trying to ensure that posts are created and upvoted by real humans. Among the ideas under consideration is the use of biometric tools like World ID to verify users.
Reddit’s challenge is not just technological but philosophical: in chasing revenue, it may have compromised the authenticity that once made it valuable.
