In a remarkable demonstration of its growing dominance in the electric vehicle (EV) market, BYD sold over one million new energy vehicles (NEVs) and plug-in hybrids in the first quarter of 2025, marking a 60% increase from the same period in 2024.
This surge underscores the company’s robust expansion strategy, particularly in international markets.
BYD’s overseas sales skyrocketed, reaching a record of 206,000 vehicles sold outside of China—an impressive 110% jump compared to the previous year.
BYD Shatters Records with Over 1 Million EVs Sold in Q1 2025
The company’s aggressive global approach suggests that it is rapidly gaining traction in markets previously dominated by traditional automakers. In March alone, BYD recorded total NEV sales of 377,420, with fully electric models accounting for 416,388 units sold in the first three months of the year.
Among BYD’s latest offerings is the Yangwang U7, an ultra-luxury electric sedan featuring four electric motors that collectively produce 1,287 horsepower, propelling the vehicle from 0 to 62 mph in just 2.9 seconds and offering an impressive range of up to 720 kilometers. With a base price of approximately $87,700, the U7 positions itself as a serious contender against established luxury brands.
In Europe, BYD is anticipating a doubling in sales to 186,000 vehicles by the end of 2025, with projections indicating that this figure could reach 400,000 by 2029. This growth could be fueled by the introduction of new models such as the Sealion 7 midsize SUV and the low-cost Seagull EV, rebranded as the “Dolphin Surf” for European markets.
With ambitious targets to sell 5.5 million vehicles globally this year and over 800,000 EVs abroad, BYD’s trajectory demonstrates its potential to outpace rivals like Ford, Honda, and Nissan in the evolving landscape of the automotive industry.
