BYD Launches Dolphin Surf: The Most Affordable EV In Europe

BYD Launches Dolphin Surf: The Most Affordable EV In Europe

BYD has officially launched the Dolphin Surf, touted as the most affordable electric vehicle (EV) in Europe, with a starting price of £18,650 (approximately $25,000).

This new model finds itself in competition with the Dacia Spring, the current cheapest EV in the UK priced at £14,995.

At a recent launch event, BYD’s special advisor for Europe, Alfredo Altavilla, referred to the Dolphin Surf as “the missing piece in the A/B-segment,” emphasizing its strategic importance in BYD’s expansion in the region.

New BYD Dolphin Surf Aims to Compete with Dacia Spring in UK EV Market

In just under a year, BYD has introduced six new models and aims to tailor its vehicles specifically for the European market by 2026. Notably, BYD recently outperformed Tesla in vehicle registrations across Europe for the first time in April, and it also surpassed Tesla’s sales figures in the UK last month, especially in the plug-in hybrid segment where the Seal U was particularly well-received.

To support its growth plans, BYD will begin production at a new plant in Hungary by the end of this year, which will allow for greater customization to meet local buyer preferences.

— Ramez Naam (@ramez) June 24, 2025

Altavilla stated, “As we go forward into 2026, more and more of the BYD line-up will be specific to this region.” The company expects to double its sales in Europe this year, projecting around 186,000 vehicles sold, with forecasts suggesting sales could reach 400,000 by 2029.

While BYD has gained recognition for providing affordable EVs like the Seagull, the company is also venturing into the luxury market with brands like Denza and Yangwang to compete with German luxury automakers, including Porsche.

This dual approach positions BYD to capture a significant share of both the economy and luxury EV markets in Europe, with Altavilla hinting at more product reveals before the year’s end.

Ferrari Delays Launch of Electric Vehicle by Two Years Amid Low Demand

Ferrari Delays Launch of Electric Vehicle by Two Years Amid Low Demand

Ferrari has officially announced a delay in the launch of its second electric vehicle (EV) by at least two years, attributing the decision to a lack of demand for luxury electric sports cars.

Despite initially planning for a release as early as next year, industry insiders state that realistic consumer interest remains sluggish, with one source indicating that “real, sustainable demand is non-existent for an electric sports car.” As a result, the new Ferrari EV is now not expected to arrive before 2028.

In stark contrast, BYD is making significant strides in the electric luxury market with the launch of its Yangwang U7 sedan.

Ferrari’s Electric Dream Postponed: Will BYD Set the New Standard?

This powerhouse boasts nearly 1,300 horsepower from four electric motors and features a robust 135.5 kWh battery, offering an impressive range of approximately 720 km (about 450 miles).

The U7’s remarkable acceleration allows it to go from 0 to 62 mph in just 2.9 seconds, showcasing BYD’s capabilities in the luxury segment.

The Yangwang U7 also integrates advanced technology with a comprehensive suite of smart features, including BYD’s “God’s Eye A” Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) that utilizes multiple sensors for enhanced safety and navigation. Inside, the vehicle is designed for a premium experience, featuring multiple screens designed to engage both front and rear passengers.

Priced at 628,000 yuan (around $87,000), the U7 presents a competitive alternative to Ferrari’s forthcoming EV, which is projected to start at over 500,000 euros (more than $500,000).

This price disparity, along with BYD’s initial success—having already sold over 200,000 SU7 models in less than a year—begs the question: Can luxury electric sports cars flourish, or does Ferrari’s skepticism hold true?

As the market evolves, all eyes will be on upcoming sales data to see which brand will emerge as a leader in this innovative terrain.

BYD Outsells Tesla for the First Time in the UK, Delivering Over 3,000 Vehicles

BYD has officially launched its most affordable electric vehicle (EV) in Europe, the Dolphin Surf, with a starting price of approximately $25,000.

This new offering aims to replicate the success of the Seagull model in China, which has gained immense popularity and was recently priced at just $7,800 after further reductions.

The Dolphin Surf is set to cater to a similar market segment in Europe, where affordability is becoming increasingly crucial for consumer adoption of EVs.

Concerns Rise in China Over BYD’s Aggressive Pricing Strategy

As BYD continues to expand its presence internationally, the company recently garnered attention by outselling Tesla in the UK, delivering 3,025 vehicles compared to Tesla’s 2,016. This milestone marks a significant shift, as it represents BYD’s first time surpassing Tesla’s sales in the European market, highlighting a rapid ascent within a competitive landscape.

The China Automobile Manufacturers Association has voiced concerns regarding BYD’s aggressive pricing strategy, warning that such price cuts may incite a “war panic” among domestic competitors in China.

However, industry experts suggest that these tactics could stimulate demand for electric vehicles across Europe, ensuring that cost-effective options are readily available to consumers.

BYD, which manufactures nearly all components of its vehicles—including batteries and powertrains—can maintain lower prices while remaining profitable. This vertically integrated approach gives the company a significant edge in a market increasingly turned to electrification.

According to S&P Global Mobility, BYD is expected to more than double its sales in Europe by 2025, projecting around 186,000 units, with aspirations to reach over 400,000 by 2030.

BYD’s move into the compact EV segment, as articulated by Executive Vice President Stella Li, positions it well for capturing a larger share of Europe’s growing electrified vehicle market. As international demand for affordable electric transportation rises, BYD is poised to be a brand to watch in the coming years.

China Leads Global Electric Vehicle Sales with Record 1 Million Units in May

China Leads Global Electric Vehicle Sales with Record 1 Million Units in May

Global electric vehicle (EV) sales surged dramatically in May 2025, with 1.6 million units sold, marking a significant total of 7.2 million for the year thus far—an impressive 28% increase compared to the same period in 2024.

Leading this growth, China reported a record 1 million EVs sold in May alone, a remarkable 33% rise year-over-year and a 10% leap from April.

As the world’s largest market for EVs, China continues to set the pace, outpacing its counterparts in North America and Europe. Charles Lester from Rho Motion noted, “The story this month is the continued chasm between Chinese market growth and the faltering market in North America”.

BYD Expands in Europe Amid Shifting Market Dynamics and New Incentives

In stark contrast, North American sales showed only a 3% increase year-to-date, hampered by a notable decline in Canada due to slashed subsidies, which resulted in a staggering 20% drop in sales. The U.S. managed a modest 4% growth, partially credited to federal EV tax credits, which are set to phase out starting in 2026.

Europe, meanwhile, enjoyed a 27% growth rate in EV sales, with Spain and Italy particularly flourishing—experiencing 72% and 58% increases, respectively.

— Jason Smith – 上官杰文 (@ShangguanJiewen) November 7, 2024

Germany also stepped up, rolling out new tax incentives aimed at boosting commercial EV sales, a move that could spur growth in the coming months as corporate vehicles dominate the auto market.

Chinese automaker BYD is capitalizing on this expansion, increasing its presence in Europe with new battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrids, including the recently launched budget-friendly Dolphin Surf, which is not subject to the new EU tariffs affecting Chinese imports.

With the market dynamics shifting and incentives fluctuating, the race for EV supremacy continues as stakeholders prepare for a year of anticipated acceleration.

The automaker is set to open a production facility in Hungary later this year along with a research and development center and a European headquarters in Budapest.

Currently, BYD operates 16 dealerships in Belgium, nearly 40 in Spain, and over 50 in France, with aspirations to expand from 27 to 120 locations in Germany. By strategically increasing its footprint in key European markets, BYD aims to meet the growing demand for both all-electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids.

New BYD Seal 06 EV Enters China’s Price War With Starting Price of $15,300

This follows BYD’s decision to slash prices by as much as 34% across 22 of its most popular models, including the Seagull EV, which now starts at a remarkably low price of 55,800 yuan ($7,800). As the Seal 06 enters the scene, it positions itself as a formidable challenger to established players, most notably Tesla.

The new Seal 06 EV is available in three trims, equipped with two battery options that promise a range of 470 km (292 miles) to 545 km (339 miles) under the China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC).

Notably, while the Seal 06 offers a shorter range than the base Tesla Model 3, which boasts a range of 634 km (394 miles) for a starting price of 235,500 yuan ($32,800), it does so at less than half the cost.

Apart from its competitive pricing, the Seal 06 EV comes packed with over 33 premium features. Among these are heated and ventilated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, ambient lighting, a surround sound system, and even a built-in refrigerator capable of heating and cooling.

With its impressive specifications and affordability, observers are left to ponder whether this latest offering will push Tesla and other competitors to adjust their pricing strategies in the face of increasing pressure from BYD.

BYD Slashes Prices on EVs, Sparking Concerns of a Price War in China

BYD Slashes Prices on EVs, Sparking Concerns of a Price War in China

BYD, the Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, has recently implemented substantial price cuts across its vehicle lineup, with its flagship Seagull EV’s price slashed from 69,800 yuan to 55,800 yuan, representing a notable 20% discount.

This move is part of a broader reduction affecting 22 models, with some prices dropping by as much as 34%. While BYD’s pricing strategy has led to an increase in sales—recording 377,000 passenger vehicles in May alone—this aggressive approach has raised alarms among top officials and regulators in China.

Chinese authorities have warned that BYD’s price cuts are causing a “price war panic,” which could result in destructive competition that threatens the margins and stability of the automotive sector.

Will BYD’s Price Reductions Threaten Quality and Stability in the EV Market?

The China Automobile Manufacturers Association characterized the situation as “disorderly price wars,” cautioning that such actions could further compress profit margins and degrade the reputation of “Made-in-China” products.

As BYD continues to expand its market presence with growing international sales—89,000 new energy vehicles (NEVs) sold last month alone—competitors like NIO, XPeng, Geely, and Li Auto have seen their stock prices tumble in response.

The price reductions have exerted pressure on other automakers to follow suit, potentially leading to a race to the bottom that could compromise product quality and brand integrity.

Observations from industry experts suggest that while consumers benefit from lower prices, the ongoing cuts could jeopardize the long-term financial health of the sector. Just recently, reports have circulated calling for manufacturers to rein in discounts before quality issues arise.

As BYD prepares for continued expansion in Europe—with the unveiling of the Dolphin Surf model—stakeholders are left wondering how these significant tactical shifts will reshape the competitive landscape of the EV market.

BYD Surpasses Tesla in UK EV Registrations with 407% Increase

BYD has made a significant mark in the UK electric vehicle (EV) market, registering 3,025 units in May 2024, an impressive 407% increase compared to just 596 vehicles registered in May 2023.

This surge has allowed BYD to surpass Tesla, which recorded 2,016 registrations during the same month—a 36% decline from last year.

As a result, BYD is rapidly closing the gap with Tesla for year-to-date vehicle registrations, tallying 14,807 compared to Tesla’s 15,002, which reflects a 7.8% decline from 2023.

UK EV Market Sees Record Sales in May 2024 as BYD Makes Strides

The overall vehicle registrations in the UK rose by 1.6% last month to 150,070 units, marking the strongest May for sales since 2021. Interestingly, the market share for fully electric vehicles climbed to 21.8%, up from 17.6% in May 2023, although it still lags behind the regulatory target of 28%. Plug-in hybrids saw the most substantial growth, doubling their sales figures year-over-year with nearly 17,900 registrations.

A strategic move for BYD has been the introduction of the Dolphin Surf, an affordable EV priced around 23,000 euros ($26,000) with a driving range of 220 km (137 miles).

This model is part of an expanding lineup intended to capture a broader segment of the market. Reports suggest that BYD’s sales in Europe could potentially double this year to approximately 186,000 units and hit around 400,000 by 2029.

Despite this optimistic growth trajectory for BYD, analysts caution that the significant discounts driving current sales figures are unsustainable due to various cost pressures affecting the industry.

Nevertheless, with new entry-level models entering the market, BYD may be well-positioned to challenge Tesla’s dominance in both the UK and Europe this year, a scenario that can reshape the competitive landscape of electric mobility.

In comparison, Tesla’s sales across the EU, EFTA, and the UK totaled only 7,261 units, representing a staggering 49% decline year-over-year. This shift in the market could signify a transformative period in the EV industry, as BYD continues to cement its status as a leading player, leveraging both technology and infrastructure to outpace its competitors.

Tesla’s Popularity Dips as BYD Gains Ground in the EV Market

The latest UBS Evidence Lab EV Survey reveals a notable decline in Tesla’s popularity among consumers. Only 14% of respondents in China now view Tesla as their top EV choice, down from 18% in the previous year.

This trend reflects a broader global sentiment, with only 36% of potential buyers considering a Tesla, a decrease from 39% last year. Particularly in the U.S., support for the brand has waned, with just 18% of consumers naming Tesla as their preferred EV brand, a decline from 22% earlier in 2024. In Europe, BMW and Audi have emerged as more attractive options compared to Tesla.
