Capcom used its October 2 engineering conference to put more shape around REX, the overhaul of the RE Engine. REX, short for RE neXt engine and first mentioned in 2023, is being pitched as a smarter set of tools for developers, not a push to make games without people. The goal, Capcom says, is to speed up development, make scaling easier, and support everything from high-end PCs to Nintendo Switch.
The company also went out of its way to say the automation is there to help human teams, not replace them, and that generated assets won’t be added to shipped games. Its open-source tools, RE:Dox and RE:Log, are meant to help developers and software agents with code analysis, playtests, bug tracking, debugging, QA, performance and memory checks, visual or gameplay issues, and clearer compilation and error reports.
For people who keep an eye on game tech, the bigger story is where this points. Capcom is also updating the core engine so it’s easier to maintain across platforms, which lines up with similar workflow changes at Unity, Ubisoft, Square Enix, and Epic. That’s happening even as, according to 2026 surveys, usage stood at 85.8% among Japanese developers versus 36% in North America and Europe, while 52% of GDC survey respondents said the technology is affecting the industry negatively.
Capcom’s presentation materials are already available, and RE:Dox and RE:Log are the projects to watch for on GitHub.
