ChatGPT 01 vs 4.0: What are the differences and when should we use one or the other

What o1 offers us: Advanced reasoning for the most demanding

The o1 model, also known as Project Strawberry, was introduced as OpenAI’s first model with reasoning capabilities. This means that it not only generates answers but also reviews its own results to offer us the highest possible accuracy. This way of operating is tremendously useful in complex math problems, code creation, or scientific issues.

The model uses a completely new optimization algorithm and a dataset specifically tailored to this reasoning approach. Thanks to this, according to OpenAI, serious errors have been reduced by 34% compared to its previous version, resulting in more reliable responses.

The o1 model, however, is not accessible to all users. Its availability is reserved for those with Plus or Pro subscriptions. With the Plus version, we have 50 weekly messages with o1, while the Pro subscription removes these restrictions.

If our work involves solving highly technical problems or analyzing large volumes of complex data, o1 is the ideal choice. It allows for much more extensive text input; it enables the system to break down a complex request into individual tasks and complete it; and, although its focus is not as centered on creativity or natural language as other models, it offers us unparalleled calculation and analysis capabilities.

The versatility of GPT-4o: Speed and multimodal capability

GPT-4o has been designed to offer a balance between speed, cost, and performance. This model was a significant step forward compared to GPT-4, and it excels in natural language tasks, creative generation, and especially multimodal processing. The latter includes text, audio and vision.

Unlike o1, GPT-4o is also available in the free tier of ChatGPT, although with daily usage limits. With a Plus subscription, the restrictions are considerably relaxed, allowing for much smoother use of the model. Among its strengths is its 128,000-character context window, making it ideal for long or complex projects that require working with large volumes of information, and the Canvas mode.

GPT-4o delivers excellent results in creative tasks such as story generation, text writing, or visual content creation. If we are looking for a model that is fast, efficient, and more affordable, this option is sure to meet our needs.

When to choose one or the other

The decision between o1 and GPT-4o largely depends on the type of task at hand. If we need a complete and specific solution for complex questions, o1 is the right choice. This includes projects that require detailed data analysis, complex calculations, or rigorous answer verification. Also, those in which the request itself includes several steps or subtasks.

On the contrary, if we are looking for a more versatile, flexible, fast model oriented towards creative or more general tasks, GPT-4o is the ideal option. Its balance between cost and performance makes this model a valuable tool for our daily activities, from content generation to solving more general queries.

Overall, o1 offers us maximum precision in complex statements, while GPT-4o stands out for its versatility and flexibility. Depending on our needs, having both models allows us to always have the right tool at hand.
