Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is set for 2026: one major change to Homer

Christopher Nolan’s take on Homer’s The Odyssey hits theaters on July 17, 2026, and it doesn’t sound like a dutiful, marble-statue version of the classic. The movie appears to lean into a more modern reading of the epic, with language and character work pulled heavily from Emily Wilson’s 2017 translation. The phrasing is said to be clear and contemporary, the kind that makes the story feel alive and close at hand instead of sealed off behind glass.

Nolan also seems to be pulling the poem inward, treating it less like a grand myth on display and more like a personal story about family, revenge, war, and what war leaves sitting in people long after it ends. If The Odyssey is something you mostly remember from school, this version sounds less interested in gods, monsters, and big legendary set pieces, and more interested in a marriage under pressure, a father desperate to make it home, and the emotional wreckage that comes with surviving battle.

A lot of the conversation around the film has circled guilt, shame, trauma, and PTSD, which gives Odysseus a much sharper psychological center. Nolan has even described it as a “middle-aged love story,” and he’s reportedly brushed aside the backlash aimed at Emily Wilson’s more contemporary, at times openly feminist interpretation.

Still, The Odyssey is a $250 million blockbuster. It has Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, a massive ensemble, and IMAX 70mm cameras paired with quieter new tech for dialogue scenes. So if you’re after something huge in scale but not emotionally distant, Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey looks like one to keep an eye on.

You’ll be able to see The Odyssey in theaters, and early reports point to a 99% Rotten Tomatoes score based on 140 reviews, along with strong praise for Christopher Nolan and Matt Damon.
