Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 director Guillaume Broche recently warned that games built from prompts could soon be made “in 5 seconds,” and he called that future “a little scary.” He also said he hopes games made that way “would not be very good,” because when automation takes over, the bigger loss, for players and developers alike, is the joy that comes with making something.
For Broche, that’s the part that matters. Machine-driven creative tools, he said, “take away from the joy” of creating things.
The comments come after Sandfall Interactive’s earlier controversy over machine-generated placeholder textures in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Those assets were removed, but two Indie Game Awards Game of the Year wins were still revoked under the event’s ban on machine-generated content. Broche later said everything in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is made by humans, that the team tried those tools and “didn’t like it at all, it felt wrong,” and that Sandfall Interactive won’t use them again.
If you follow game development, the warning lands in a very real debate.
Tools such as Gameer, Summer Engine, SeaVerse, Exists.ai, and Meta’s Pocket already turn prompts into simple games. The survey numbers point both ways. In GDC’s 2026 survey, 52% of 2,300 developers said the impact was negative. SlashData’s Q3 2025 survey found that 76% of 2,000 developers use the tools, and 68% said they help speed up the work.
