Motorsport World Mourns: Craig Breen, Renowned Driver, Passes Away in Testing
World Rally Championship driver Craig Breen has died after crashing in practice. Rest in peace, Brian.
If you like the rally world you probably know who he is, because Craig Breen was not just another driver, he was one of the greats of the championship and one of the best drivers of the whole circuit. Today, April 13, 2023, he died due to a car accident.
The factory Hyundai driver went off the road today during a team test in Croatia and succumbed to injuries sustained in the accident. His co-driver, James Fulton, was miraculously unhurt in the accident.
Breen was preparing for his second WRC start of the season as Hyundai’s third driver after rejoining the South Korean marque for the second time following a full season with Ford last year.
The 33-year-old Irishman finished second at Rally Sweden in February, in what was his first WRC appearance of the season.
That place equaled the best result of his WRC career after scoring second places in Sweden 2018, Estonia, 2020-2021, Belgium 2021 and Sardinia 2022.
Hyundai confirmed the news in a brief statement: “Hyundai Motorsport is deeply saddened to confirm that driver Craig Breen lost his life today following an accident during the Croatia Rally pre-race test,” reads the statement.
Craig Breen, son of Ray Breen, also a rally driver, began his career on circuits, but switched to full-time rallying in 2009.
After competing in the British Rally Championship and Irish Tarmac Rally Championship in 2010, he moved to the WRC the following season, where he competed in the WRC Academy, becoming the inaugural winner of the Academy Cup.
Breen finally arrived in the top category of rallying in 2016. He remained with Citroen before losing his drive at the end of the 2018 season. Breen scored 30 stage wins in the WRC and a total of eight podiums in 81 rallies.
