Crimson Desert tops 6 million sales: Pearl Abyss says updates give back

Pearl Abyss says its new IP, Crimson Desert, has now sold more than 6 million copies since launching on March 19. That also confirms another milestone the company had pointed to earlier: the game cleared 5 million copies in its first month.

Will Powers, Pearl Abyss’s PR and marketing director, said a brand-new IP reaching 5 million that fast is something worth celebrating, especially in a year dominated by stories about layoffs and studio shutdowns.

Powers also said the game’s major post-launch patches weren’t designed to “sell more” copies. In his words, they were meant to “give more back to the community.” Those updates have tightened the controls, cleaned up the UI, and added a range of quality-of-life fixes, along with smaller extras such as pet simulation features and even a pinball mini-game.

That context matters. Crimson Desert launched in good shape, but not perfect shape, and it’s sitting at about a 78 on Metacritic. Reviews tended to praise the visuals, the open world, and the combat. The weaker points were the story, the controls, and what some critics saw as system overload. Pearl Abyss says there’s more on the way, including additional free updates, story improvements, cross-save support, and a paid DLC expansion it describes as “substantively different.”

So if you were holding off until the rough edges got smoothed out, Crimson Desert now looks like a pretty easy recommendation. Pearl Abyss says more than 80% of sales have come from North America and Europe, which makes this a real breakout beyond Black Desert and helps explain why expectations are rising for the company’s first annual operating profit in four years.

Crimson Desert is out now, and Pearl Abyss says South Korean officials, including Prime Minister Kim Min-seok, have already praised it as a milestone for K-content.
