PlayStation isn’t backing away from live service. Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Hideaki Nishino said the company will keep investing in service-based games as a way to reach more players around the world, even after Firewalk Studios’ Concord shut down, Bungie’s Marathon ran into a troubled rollout, and Sony Group CFO Lin Tao admitted the strategy is “not entirely going smoothly.”
So yes, you should still expect more first- and third-party releases built around active communities. Sony’s Q1 FY2025 results show live service made up about 40% of first-party software revenue, and games like Helldivers 2, MLB The Show, Gran Turismo 7, and Destiny 2 are still bringing in money.
Nishino also singled out MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls, Arc System Works’ 2026 4v4 tag-team fighter. Its Digital Deluxe and Ultimate editions already promise a Year 1 pass with four post-launch characters and one stage, which tells you Sony still believes in long-tail support when the model actually works.
If you play PlayStation multiplayer games, keep an eye on this. Sony seems to be keeping single-player titles more closely tied to PlayStation hardware, while putting live service games on both PlayStation 5 and PC.
And if you read that alongside Nishino’s lifestyle comments and the momentum around PlayStation Portal, it also feels like another hint that PlayStation could be lining up a broader PlayStation 6-era handheld push around 2027 or 2028, even if nothing official has been announced.
