Cyberpunk 2077 has officially passed 40 million copies sold worldwide in 2026, according to CD Projekt Red. That puts the studio’s RPG among the 20 best-selling video games ever made.
That number hits differently if you remember the December 2020 launch. The game arrived broken: bugs, crashes, and especially poor performance on last-generation consoles triggered a huge backlash. Sony pulled Cyberpunk 2077 from the PlayStation Store for a stretch, and CD Projekt Red took a real hit to its reputation, even with a strong RPG still sitting underneath the mess.
It took years of updates to turn that around. Patch after patch improved stability, and then the 2.0 update redid perks, combat flow, police behavior, and vehicle combat. Phantom Liberty, released in 2023 and widely praised, helped push the conversation away from what Cyberpunk 2077 was at release and toward what it had finally become.
Netflix’s Cyberpunk: Edgerunners brought a fresh wave of interest in 2022. And the momentum didn’t disappear after that. In June 2026, Cyberpunk 2077 climbed past 87,000 concurrent players on Steam, its highest player count since Phantom Liberty launched.
If you stayed away at launch, it’s worth picking up now. Between the PlayStation 5 Pro update, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners season 2, and a sequel already in development, CD Projekt Red is clearly treating Cyberpunk as a major long-term franchise, even if detailed regional sales numbers and demographic data are still limited, and you can buy the game on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox.
