Diablo 5 has moved into motion-capture production. Blizzard Entertainment revealed the game at BlizzCon 2026, and this is the first big public sign of development moving forward since cinematic director Neil David Carter posted “First shoot #Diablo5” from a mocap studio. It all lands well ahead of Blizzard’s Spring 2029 release window.
Since the update came from Blizzard’s cinematic team, the clearest read is that cutscene work is underway. That usually means the larger story shape, the main characters, and the big narrative beats are already in place. Still, motion capture on a project this large can begin years before release, so this doesn’t mean the game is anywhere near done.
At BlizzCon 2026, Blizzard said Diablo 5 takes place 100 years after Diablo 4, in a broken-down Sanctuary where Diablo seems to have won. The studio also said players can expect the Heir to Westmarch, a Diablo 4 engine fork, procedural maps, and more classes.
Blizzard has also said Diablo 4 will keep getting support after Diablo 5 launches. The Lord of Hatred expansion is already out, and more seasonal content is on the way. Even so, the early reveal has split fans between confidence, skepticism, and the usual theory-making, including the idea that Blizzard wants more transparency and player feedback while the game is still being built.
If you follow Diablo closely, this is the kind of update people will keep an eye on.
You can’t download Diablo 5 yet. Blizzard has only announced a Spring 2029 window, and it still hasn’t named any platforms.
