Did Microsoft just confirm cross-platform?

Did Microsoft just confirm cross-platform play? It seems that according to discoveries by several Twitter users, there are indications that this may be possible.

There has been speculation all week that Microsoft could make the leap to becoming a multi-platform company. Instead of seeking exclusives and focusing on expanding its catalog, it could also produce games for other consoles and platforms. Something that has not sat well with some fans, and has been viewed with curiosity and astonishment by others. But to what extent is this true? Well, according to the clues, it seems to be very likely.

Today, the Twitter user known as Zuby Tech has noticed a series of small details on the Fable and Avowed pages. In the past, there were Xbox Series logos, the name Xbox Game Pass was specified, and before the Game Pass name, there was the Xbox logo. But all of that has disappeared with the update to add the synopsis. Now it only says Consoles and PC, it’s called Game Pass, and there is no logo in sight. This could mean that it is going to expand beyond the Xbox ecosystem. At least, if we believe the recent rumors.

In fairness, this change is not something that has happened recently. It is simply something that we had not noticed until now. As pointed out by insider billbil_kun, this change occurred at some point between October and November 2023. It’s just that we didn’t pay attention to it back then, as there was no reason to believe it had more significance than a page redesign.

Does that mean there is no story behind it? Not at all. Significant decisions like transitioning to multiplatform game production take months, if not years, so the redesign is also something that would be planned well in advance. That’s why the change happened a few months ago, it doesn’t mean there is no interest in changing their approach. Especially when Microsoft as a whole has already moved towards multiplatform and service sales years ago, where Game Pass would fit perfectly.

At the end of the day, it would be a logical move. We would be talking about opening up a potential market of hundreds of millions of new consoles to which to bring their catalog, in addition to their Game Pass. Something necessary after the aggressive acquisitions of previous years. But to confirm all this, we will still have to wait until the week of February 12th, when Xbox CEO Phil Spencer has promised to clarify all this.
