Disney outlines Star Wars 50th anniversary plans: no original trilogy remake
Disney and Lucasfilm have laid out what they’re doing in 2027 for the 50th anniversary of Star Wars, and an original trilogy remake isn’t part of it. What they are planning is a celebration of the 1977 film itself, starting with a theatrical re-release of the unaltered Star Wars: A New Hope in February 2027. Lucasfilm still hasn’t officially announced remakes of Star Wars: A New Hope, Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, or Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, and it’s still not clear how any of this will roll out internationally.
There’s more attached to the anniversary, too. Lucasfilm is putting out Star Wars: A New Hope: Triple Take, a graphic novel version of the story told through the perspectives of Luke, Leia, and Han. New unabridged audiobook editions of the original trilogy, narrated by Marc Thompson, are also set for February 2, 2027. On top of that, there’s Star Wars: The Experience at The Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, a wider 2027 promotional push with products, collaborations, and events teased by Hasbro, plus more publishing on the way, including Star Wars: Eyes Like Stars and another Star Wars: Visions manga release.
For anyone who’d rather revisit the original movie and the period around it than sit through a reboot, this update looks pretty appealing.
You’ll be able to see Star Wars: A New Hope in theaters in February 2027, pick up the audiobooks on February 2, and visit the exhibition in Philadelphia during the anniversary run.
