Keeping a digital photo gallery organized can feel like an impossible task, especially when it’s cluttered with screenshots, duplicates, and blurry shots. Google Photos has introduced a clever feature that lets users regain control by organizing images into neat stacks — and it’s more powerful than ever.
Stack and sort your gallery with ease
The stacking feature in Google Photos allows you to group related images together into a single pile, helping maintain a clean and easy-to-navigate gallery. Initially, Google Photos handled this automatically, identifying and stacking similar images — for example, burst shots from a concert or trip. This automation made galleries less chaotic, but lacked user control.
Now, a new manual stacking option gives users full authority over how to group their photos. By simply selecting the images you want, tapping the three-dot menu, and choosing “Stack photos,” you can create a personalized bundle. You can also assign a cover photo to represent the stack, making it visually easier to find specific memories.
This tool is especially useful for those who want to curate events, moments, or themes — such as gathering all images from a birthday party or weekend trip. And unlike the previous version, the new feature doesn’t require photos to be visually similar, giving users more flexibility to define their own categories.
Although this update is currently rolling out gradually and appears first on iOS, Google plans to extend it to Android users soon, enhancing photo organization across platforms.
