Some of Hollywood’s biggest franchises are starting to look like they’re heading for the finish line, at least in their current versions. Dune, The Hunger Games, Fast & Furious, and Jumanji all have planned stopping points on the horizon as studios get warier of franchise burnout, ballooning budgets, and a global box office that doesn’t feel as dependable as it used to.
Denis Villeneuve has long talked about Dune as a three-film story, and Dune Messiah is now in development as his final chapter. Katniss Everdeen’s arc already ended with The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, but that series has kept going through prequels. Sunrise on the Reaping is set for November 20, 2026, and whatever comes after will probably depend on whether Suzanne Collins decides to write more.
Fast & Furious is still expected to wrap its main storyline with Fast Forever in 2028, even if the spin-offs keep going. Jumanji looks to be in a similar spot. Dwayne Johnson has said the next film will end the current cast’s run, which started in 2017 and has already brought in more than $1.7 billion worldwide.
Studios have a reason to be careful. Franchise fatigue is real. Sequels are landing less consistently, audiences are pickier about what they show up for, and even big tentpoles like Fast X can run into real questions about profit once production and marketing costs climb high enough.
If you keep up with franchise news, watch this closely. These movies are going to play out in theaters while streaming keeps giving people more reasons to stay home, and overseas markets, especially China, are getting harder to predict and more driven by local-language hits.
