When The Odyssey premiered in theaters, Elon Musk’s acolytes were giving each other online pats on the back, convinced that the movie would be a complete flop and that nobody would go see it. Especially when they pointed out that it had (horror!) historical errors. How is that possible, in a work of fiction? Musk, blustering as usual and after making a fool of himself over the box office, announced that he’d use Grok to make a new movie based on Homer’s epic, but infinitely better, because it would be “historically accurate.” The result is here and… Oof.
The AIdyssey
That said: he hasn’t made the film adaptation, as promised, but an episodic version of which we’ve only seen 7 minutes on Twitter (or X, if you prefer to humor him). Musk did it with the help of a studio and a director specializing in AI, and the response was immediate: although the tweet has 6.8 million views (he only has 140 million more to go to catch up with Christopher Nolan), the reaction hasn’t exactly been positive.
People aren’t only faulting it for being in English (something odd in a “historically appropriate” production), but also for looking awful and deserving all the criticism it’s getting. Even those who pay Musk and have the blue check have gone with comments like “It perfectly encapsulates Elon’s taste. Total shit”. There are also those who believe that in a year they’ll be able to do it properly, something people have been saying for five years.

It’s becoming clearer and clearer that those who cry that Hollywood is finished (in the best box-office year since the pandemic) don’t really know what they’re supporting. The mainstream audience just isn’t on board, at least for now, no matter how much they insist. And between Nolan’s Odyssey and Musk’s, thankfully, I think the choice is pretty clear.
