Since its emergence, generative artificial intelligence has managed to capture the attention of a large part of the public, amazed by the great potential it offers. This potential has not gone unnoticed by Embracer Group, which claims to be considering using it for video game development.
The Swedish conglomerate, which made headlines days ago for the closure of Pieces Interactive (creators of Alone in the Dark), has made its latest annual report public. In it, they outline their corporate strategy and address the risks that both Embracer and the video game industry face when developing new titles. For them, AI is seen as a solution to these problems.
Within the Risk and Mitigation Overview section, they clearly state their position regarding the use of AI: “By leveraging AI, we can create more engaging and immersive experiences that provide a unique, dynamic, and personalized experience for each player. […] Not using AI for relevant tasks within Embracer Group will lead us to lose competitiveness and be surpassed by our competitors.”

However, Tomas Hedman, Chief Privacy Officer of Embracer, clarifies in the same report that the company does not want to replace humans with AI: “we do not want to replace people with AI, but empower them”. He also argues that AI can “open up programming to a wider group of developers” by reducing the barrier to entry for creating games.
Many professionals in the industry have already expressed in the past their concerns about the use of AI and how it could affect their jobs. If we take into account the recent layoffs carried out by Embracer, it could be said that these fears are perfectly justified.
