Two men were recently arrested in Shihezi, Xinjiang, after allegedly stealing RAM from gaming PCs in local esports hotels. Local reports say the suspects, Li and Cheng, checked into four hotels, removed 16 memory sticks from the in-room systems, and made about 13,200 yuan, a little over $2,000, in around a month.
Investigators say the two booked rooms like any other guests, opened the PC cases, pulled out the memory modules, and then sold them through online marketplaces and local computer shops. Hotel staff only caught on during routine maintenance, when they found several machines wouldn’t boot. From there, they used CCTV footage and guest records to help police identify the suspects.
If you run or use esports hotels, this case deserves a close look. Private rooms make it much easier to steal small, high-value parts like RAM than in a traditional PC café. Similar cases have already shown up in China and South Korea, but there’s still not much public reporting on this in North America or Europe, and not much sign of an industry-wide response either.
To guard against this, you’ll want tamper-evident case seals, cabinets or desks that keep people from getting to the hardware, software alerts when configurations change, smart locks with detailed entry logs, and better staff training. If nobody notices the theft quickly, a missing part can turn into a customer-service mess too.
