Evil Dead Rise has landed on HBO Max, which puts the Evil Dead franchise back in the mix for HBO Max Halloween watchlists and gives subscribers a fresh entry in Sam Raimi’s long-running horror series.
If you’re cycling back through regular October picks like The Silence of the Lambs, The Shining, Seven, and Zodiac, here’s one thing to clear up: there is no officially released Evil Dead Burn. Online, you’ll run into plot synopses about Alice Price, hostile in-laws, a Necronomicon variant, and a Kandarian Dagger. None of that belongs to an actual released film. Raimi’s 40-year-old series still runs from The Evil Dead and Evil Dead 2 to Army of Darkness, Ash vs Evil Dead, and now Evil Dead Rise.
Lee Cronin directed Evil Dead Rise. It premiered at SXSW on March 15, 2023, then reached U.S. theaters on April 21 after reportedly strong test screenings pushed it out of its planned HBO Max release. From there, it turned a reported $15 million to $19 million budget into a $24.5 million domestic opening and more than $147 million worldwide. That made it the highest-grossing movie in the franchise. It also holds an 85% Rotten Tomatoes score from 241 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. Younger viewers, in particular, seemed to connect with the Los Angeles high-rise setting, along with the movie’s focus on family, motherhood, parental fear, trauma, and generational pain.
If HBO Max is where you build out your Halloween lineup, this one belongs on it, especially since Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell, and Rob Tapert have said they want to make a new Evil Dead film every two or three years. Two more movies are reportedly in development, one from Sébastien Vaniček and another from Francis Galluppi. There’s also an animated series on the way, and Bruce Campbell is expected to voice Ash Williams.
