It: Welcome to Derry has arrived on HBO, and it brings a broader, darker version of Pennywise with it.
If the films already felt like the definitive take on Pennywise, the series opens that up again. Here, Pennywise is less a clown who shows up every few decades and more a force threaded through Derry’s entire history. The show pulls from Stephen King’s deeper Derry lore to present a creature with a cyclical hold on whole generations, a sense of time where past, present, and future start to blur, and a presence that feels more Lovecraftian, almost unavoidable.
Derry matters just as much as the monster does. The town’s greed, cruelty, violence, and prejudice make the place itself feel infected, like the horror doesn’t begin and end with Pennywise. Season 1 is nastier than a lot of people will expect, with major characters dying early, people looking small and powerless next to something this ancient, any Losers Club-style resistance feeling temporary, and Pennywise’s shadow never really lifting.
If you keep up with Stephen King adaptations, this is one to watch. Season 2 shifts to 1935 and the Bradley Gang Massacre, hints at a different Pennywise, gets into how the Bob Gray clown identity was appropriated, and brings in a younger Dick Hallorann. Reviews so far have been mostly positive, and a lot of them single out the show’s ambition, its surreal atmosphere, and the way it expands the mythology, enough for some to put it among the stronger King adaptations, even if others still see it as good rather than essential. You can watch It: Welcome to Derry on HBO.
