Recently, fascinating details have been revealed about the development of the acclaimed franchise God of War, which has sparked fans’ interest in the possibility of future ventures into different mythologies. Tim Moss, the original programmer of God of War, confirmed that the developers at Sony Santa Monica considered integrating Egyptian mythology instead of Norse mythology for the acclaimed series, before opting for the Viking context in their 2018 reboot.
Kratos will go to Egypt, at some point
Rumors about an early connection with the Egyptian gods have resurfaced, driven by findings in the files of the game God of War Ragnarok, in which unused scenes were found indicating the idea of a companion for Atreus named Mau, an ancient Egyptian term that designates cats and could be a manifestation of the sun god Ra. These findings have led to speculation about a possible future twist in the franchise’s narrative towards Egypt.
Moss, when recalling the selection process of mythologies during development, mentioned that the obvious myths were considered and that Egypt was part of the conversation. However, it was decided to go with Norse mythology for being familiar, but at the same time, offering unexplored ground. I think the plan was to address Egyptian mythology at some point, he noted, leaving the door open for future plots.
The actor who plays Kratos, Christopher Judge, also expressed his desire for a sequel to be set in Egypt, although he fully trusts that, regardless of the chosen mythology, the quality of the game will be exceptional. His comments highlight the excitement among the gaming community, which eagerly awaits the next chapter of the saga.
