Takashi Yamazaki’s 2023 film Godzilla Minus One is reportedly coming back to the U.S. in a deluxe 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray collector’s edition. Shipping is expected in September or October 2024, and most of the early reporting points to an October release.
Early reports say this premium set will closely follow the Japanese 4-disc box. That would mean both the original color version and Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color, along with English subtitles and English-language menus. For U.S. fans, that’s a big deal. Yamazaki’s film opened in Japan on November 3, 2023, timed to the Godzilla franchise’s 70th anniversary, and it went on to become a rare foreign-language breakout in North America. The postwar setting helped. So did the emotional core, and of course the huge destruction set pieces.
If you collect Godzilla releases, this one seems like an easy pickup. On a reported $10 million to $15 million budget, the film earned more than $116 million worldwide and became the highest-grossing Japanese-produced Godzilla movie, based on the reported box-office numbers. It also won Best Visual Effects at the 96th Academy Awards, the first Oscar the franchise has ever taken home, with effects work delivered by a team of roughly 35 people. And the timing lines up well, since director Takashi Yamazaki’s sequel is reportedly set to open in Japan on November 3, 2026.
You’ll be able to pick up Godzilla Minus One on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray in the U.S. once retailer listings go live.
