GOG digital store has confirmed that today, Thursday, November 5, it will hold its first showcase. To celebrate its eighteenth anniversary, they have promised to begin a new chapter for the store, presenting new features and new games. Although they haven’t specified what exactly we can expect, they have given us a time and a place: 6 PM GMT/UTC, 7 PM in mainland Spain, on their YouTube channel.
The first event from a major store
GOG is a digital store that has been operating for 18 years and competes in the same market as Steam or the Epic Games Store. As a third option, its main draw is its more carefully curated catalog compared to other platforms, and all its games are DRM-free. This means that you can copy them onto a USB or a CD and share them between PCs without any issues, which means you truly own them, unlike the other digital stores.
This has made GOG a standard-bearer for digital rights. It puts a strong emphasis on genuine ownership of video games and on their preservation. This is especially true since they started focusing on rescuing old games that, because of their age, aren’t optimized to be played on current PCs. That gives them a second life.
So far they have rescued games as popular as the first three Resident Evil games, the first two Dino Crisis games, or the first Diablo. And thanks to its voting system, the community can ask GOG to bring back whatever games they want. That gives us an idea of the games we might see this afternoon in the showcase. Currently among the most requested games are Black & White, the first two Silent Hill games, Fable 2, and The Simpsons: Hit & Run, so it wouldn’t be surprising if one of them made an appearance in this first and very special GOG Showcase.
